Ships of the Imperial Fleet and Guard, 2350 (3)
« on: December 21, 2009, 09:09:32 AM »
Imperial Navy, 2350
The Imperial Navy has a long tradition of service and honor, going back to the formation of the Empire nearly 300 years ago.  The current Navy has gone through many changes since the interstellar era, and is struggling to return to the traditions of the old Navy.  In the years after the Collapse, the portion of the Navy trapped in the Solar System was reorganized into the System Defense Force and the officer corps was purged several times, largely due to concern amongst the leaders of the time about a possible coup attempt.  Since the Mutiny the SDF has been disbanded and the old Imperial Navy re-established.

The Imperial Navy owes primary allegiance to the Imperial Constitution, the Imperial Senate, and the Emperor, in that order.  In actual fact the Emperor, or his Regent, is the ultimate command authority for the Navy, although the Senate plays an important part in both the oversight role and in authorizing budgets.

No battleships were caught in the Solar System at the time of the Collapse, although several were under construction.  All were scrapped in the years after the Collapse, and no one in the government saw any need for such large warships to exist.  Now that the Empire is again expanding, the Imperial Navy has been pushing the Senate to authorize capital ships again.

This class is a typical missile-heavy design that the Navy intends to fill the core of its future fleets, once Senate approval is gained.

The Lexington class is the primary escort for the Essex class light cruisers.  While an effective missile defense platform, the Navy is uneasy with the fact that the class has no long-range offensive capability.

Imperial Guard, 2350
The Imperial Guard was formed in 2344 in the aftermath of the Great Mutiny.  The Guard owes primary loyalty to the House of Tannenbaum, and was formed to control the remaining old-tech Imperial ships and to protect Terra.  The Senate agreed to this proposal largely due to fear generated by the shock of the mutiny, and based on promises by Edward Tannenbaum that the Guard would be limited in size and would only be deployed in direct defense of Terra.

Since then, the Guard has grown, with Senate consent, to include ground units, including a Heavy Armored Brigade, a Shock Brigade, and a Garrison Brigade currently deployed to Mars.

Several senior Senators are becoming uneasy about the role of the Guard and have begun asking questions.  There is little likelihood of change in the near future, though, as the Regent has promised to use the Guard and its old-tech ships to help open new systems now that the warp points are open again.

The Victory is actually a prototype design for a “Scout/Survey Killer” concept that was being experimented with during the last days of the old Empire.  A new class of engines with a lowered thermal profile were being developed for deployment with this class, but were not ready for the prototype and have subsequently been lost.  The TechnoDyne Type SE engines used in the Far Eye class scout are an example of the engines intended to be deployed on this class.

The Victory is by far the most lethal ship in the Solar System at the current time.  Its cloaking device makes it very hard to detect, especially if its engines are throttled down to reduce their signatures, and its outstanding sensors and electronic warfare capabilities make it a dangerous opponent.

The Far Eye is perhaps the most amazing vessel in the Imperial Guard.  With its cloaking device, and TechnoDyne Type SE engines, the ship is nearly undetectable, as long as its sensors aren’t radiating.  Its Xr class sensors are the reason for the ship’s existence, and they are incredible.  The Xr class active sensors have a detection range of 1.4 billion kilometers, ad the thermal and EM sensors have equivalent sensitivity.

The Hard Scrabble is something of an anomaly in the Imperial Guard.  The ship is a civilian ship, built by the old Empire to travel to frontier battle sites and salvage hulks left by skirmishes with the Empire’s neighbors.  During the Rebellion the Guard wasn’t quite sure what to do with this ship, however, now that the Empire is expanding again, the ship’s civilian jump drive is sure to be useful, and the Guard’s leaders are very interested in recovering alien technology.
