I have been lucky on my latest game, when I tool a shipyard to my Jump Cruiser design I am also able to build my CE and CA designs plus I think my CO. I didn't plan it that way though, because I have noticed sometimes that even though two designs are near equal cost, they are not buildable in the same yard. So I generally do not even think about it.

This is because the cost to Refit the first ship to the second ship has to be within 20%.  If you are talking about a missile and a beam design, they will almost certainly be outside that parameter.

Like you I have noticed that my jump designs often let me build the ship they were based off of, possibly some other related designs as well.  Also the larger the ship/cost the more that you can do.  Another place I find myself able to build more than one design is if I take a 100-120 hs space ship and scale it up to a 150-180hs design.  The refit cost is usually under 20% to go from the bigger to the smaller class.
