Tragedy in Alpha Century
By early September 2 of Earths 4 science vessels were already exploring the newly discovered system of Alpha Centauri and its 3 colonisable planets.  The remaining 2 science vessels, having explored the more distant jump points of Sol, underwent refuelling and resupply at Earth before joining their fellows in Alpha Centauri.  However as soon as they transited into Alpha Centauri they detected the wrecks of both of the sister ships some 75 million kilometres away deep in-system.  Both science vessels immediately transited back into Sol and raised the alarm.  The Fleets Destroyer Squadron, currently undergoing training manoeuvres near Mars, was quickly dispatched to the Alpha Centauri jump point while both science vessels flew straight to Earth.  Though attempts were made to keep their findings a secret word soon leaked to the general public and panic began to spread.  The most popular theory was that some hostile force had attacked and destroyed both ships, though a minority believed that some accident could account for both ships lost as with the original Enterprise.

The Fleet assumed the position that until proven otherwise they would work on the assumption of a hostile force in Alpha Centauri being responsible, hence their blockade of the jump point.  To be on the safe side both of the remaining science vessels were put in for thorough overhauls to ensure there were no lingering design faults or flaws waiting to destroy both vessels.  Calls for a rescue mission into Alpha Centauri by the Destroyer Squadron from the general public’s and Federal Council were soon squashed – neither science vessel had detected any sign of life pods or beacons indicating survivors.  Either both ships had been destroyed so suddenly none of their crew were able to escape or, more ominously, something had since happened to any survivors.

In response to the assumed threat the decision was made by the Federal Council to begin enlarging the Navy once more.  A further 2 Destroyers and another Destroyer Leader where laid down at NavYards Alpha and Beta in Earth orbit, while NavYard Gamma was retooled to begin construction of a series of small 1000ton missile boats designed to contribute offensive firepower to the Destroyers more rounded capabilities.  After reviewing a number of designs the Vanguard-Class Missile Boat was selected for production at NavYard Gamma which had 5 1000ton slipyards ready for construction.

With the doubling of the size of the Navy it was also decided that the commercial sector should also be expanded, and so a further 3 Alpha-Class Freighters were laid down.  Finally, after completing thorough overhauls both Science Vessels were declared safe and fit for use and 2 more were laid down to replace those lost in Alpha Centauri.  The cost of these construction projects, coupled with the ongoing colonisation of Mars and the establishment of remote mining operations on Luna, Mercury and Titan proved a strain for the finances of the Federation and forced Earth to switch to producing Financial Centres for a limited time to improve the economy’s performance.  Even so the expenses were kept barely above income.
