You know the drill!
comments, questions, fun theories, etc all go here
Maybe, in the end, this was the best that any warrior could hope for. A chance to reconcile with your enemy, or, failing that, to fall in the pursuit of peace

Humanity is going to be in for a rough time when they first meet a hostile alien race, I think. Six box launchers and a 10cm railgun per 10,000 tons of hull is not a high economy of force.

I disagree with the naval planners, 38b km range is more than enough for an early warship and I do not see a need for dedicated military tankers anytime soon. This seems like a pet project being rammed through by some admiral with a brother in the sorium business to me.

The Navy had a hard time with the tech they possess, most of the Republic's research went into improving the economy and engines. The navy shipyards were a limiting factor too.

The Terran Navy planners are under the assumption that the Essex would need to refuel in the hangar. Unless they (meaning myself) are wrong?

Unfortunately, yes it is. The Terran Republic Navy serves in the best interest of the people.

I would assume the Essex class is nearly always carried in the hangar, in which case it consumes no fuel. It certainly cannot be used as anything other than an escort as it lacks any kind of sensors to be used for patrol work, so there's no reason an Essex should ever be deployed except in combat and then as a close escort. Which does make the fuel loading look rather excessive, admittedly.
