But you can use hull types like "missile destroyer" "missile escort" etc, then they should all be next to each other in the list on the left side of the class design window. I know it's still not the same, but this is still a way of approximating what the OP is asking for, and can be done in the current version (1.13).
Missile Ships are only one example. Cargo Ship, Colony Ship, Tanker, Transport, Tug, Orbital Miner, Orbital Fuel harvester might all be categorized as Civilian, but they hardly sit next to each other alphabetically.
Point 1 is the intended purpose of the ship type drop down. You can also create your own.
That's not what OP is talking about. OP is talking about having sorting folders so, for example, all the different missile ship classes (FFG, DDG, CG, etc.) can be under a "Missile Ship" folder to make it easier to find those similar classes. This is different from assigning the hull type - I don't think anyone in their right mind wants to group all of their FFG, DDG, and CG classes under a single hull type as this would be immersion-breaking and make trying to sort out ship classes in other windows like Naval Organization incredibly painful.

An addition to point 1 could be a "search tab" where you can input the name of the class and it shows you the ships with that name pattern.
