Is this a common thing?

Yes, for several different reasons.  You'll have to figure it out yourself.

They could be either:

1. Randomly generated wrecks
2. The remains of a NPR battle
3. The remains of an entire fleet having a catatrophic maintanence failure at the same time.

I'm leaning towards 1, as they are all in the same location.

So I just downloaded this game this week, and I just got the tech that allows me to jump to other systems (conventional start, I tend to use more basic beginnings such as low tech to learn the game at a slower pace).

Sadly, only one is cognizable, Alpha Centauri is a BIG disappointment. So far I have looked at 4 other star systems.

The thing that has me worried is that I found an entire fleet of wreaks in one of the systems and there are no planets. My sweep with a ship equipped with a MASSIVE 1,000 ton passive scanner showed no contacts on approaching the debris fields.

I am going to build a couple of other jump capable ships and start salvaging for minerals and equipment. The ship sizes vary from 8,000 tons to 18,000 tons.

Is this a common thing?
