Questions about naval organisation
« on: November 15, 2018, 04:13:27 PM »
Apologies if this is the wrong board.

I've started using this window a lot more and it's great.  I'm just wondering - is it possible to put Task Forces under a supreme commander sort of thing? So instead of all my TFs looking like this:-

They'd be under a higher level command? It's not any more practical, but it just seems a little sad that "High Command" or whatever can never actually be the highest level of command if more than one TF exists.

In the current version TF's are the higher level command.  You can rename them as you like but they are still there.  As you expand you will want multiple task forces, because the bonus for Task force officers only applies to ships in the same system as the TF HQ.  Steve is making significant alterations to this system in C# Aurora which is due out any year now  ;D

Yeah, you cannot have a command level above TF. For ships, there is basically only one command level. You can use Flag Bridge to make a mobile TF command since the TF commander and staff bonuses only apply in the system that the TF is present.

Yeah it is a lot of work to try and make the system work like in real life.

The NCN has its High Command TF (actually three of them depending on if you are Navy, BIC or BuSurvey).  That works and you can under that a normal command structure create but with the small detail it is only for roleplaying purposes.  If, as is the case now, with the Sirrocco CA having a Flag Bridge I wish to have a TF under the command of the TF commander then I have to start messing about to get all the right ships under the that new TF.

But it is then difficult (or at least I have not found an easy way) to transfer ships/squadrons between the various TFs.  You have to recreate the TF under the new TF command and then delete the old.

It is a case where TF being something you could select via the drop down list would be very good thing to have work.

We have to wait for C# Aurora to get a really good naval organisational tool. In the new version we only have one tool for organizing fleets and it seem to be a really good one too. The current one works but it is a bit limiting.

We can now have our proper Rear Admirals leading task-forces and let the captains and commodores to be in charge of the capital ships while the fleet admiral to stay behind in the shadows many system away to plot the strategic maneuvers.

This will be so good for role-playing AND for just playing the game.

Absolutely.

I've made do with dummy-PDC commands on Earth named after intermediary commands, so that the Rear Admirals and Commodores get actual command experience mechanically. The new system, with both the freedom of multiple admin commands and fleet levels, as well as jobs for junior officers, cannot arrive quickly enough.
