Listening stations & RnR
« on: April 16, 2020, 04:05:09 PM »
Greetings!

Whimsical rambling ahead with questions. . .

With the decreased sensor ranges in C# I feel the need to deploy sensor stations(or ships, possible could be ships) at various locations to. . .  get some eyes out there.
Initial plan, that I figured would be a decent idea from what I remember reading in proper lurker mode on the forum over the year. . . s:
Tractor stations into position, then let a fleet with recreation mod & maintence modules serve the ship & crew roll into position, stay awhile and then continue on its journey to other stations after having rewinded maint and deployment times.  Seems like a reasonable 'Go there, go over the equipment, fix it up, bring Michael Bolton to sing for the crew and then off to the next base'.

However, ofc this did not work.  Or well it would work, with terrible micromanagment. . .
Problem 1: To resupply a fleet you have to use the order 'Join and resupply'. . .  RnR fleet disappears into stationary fleet.  Poo. . .  no work.
Problem 2: Order delay, still, does not seem to work properly? Or did I botch it.  Fleet has to roll up and stay X amount of time to overhaul or allow for "shore leave".
Problem 3: To rewind. . .  we must have proper hangars and land the ship to be overhauled. . .  again using orders that removes one of the fleets, and no order able to detach a ship once overhaul complete.

Now, problem 3 can be solved with having a maint ship with the listening fleet, halting the progression of the maint timer.  More tonnage required but sure. . .
Problem 2: . . . I hope I'am just botching something obvious? Order delay in seconds?
Leaving problem 1:
Even with 3(solved by more ships dedicated to the task) & 2 (because that is a pretty usefull thing to have so it should work I hope) out of the way still got problems with 1, not able to resupply a fleet without joining it, thus supplies will drop and things will start exploding, or you micromanage a bucketload of listening fleets every 5-10 years to have a chance to know if somethings moving?

Am I missing something obvious? Is there a better way to have listening ships/stations around JP's and systems? . . . sensor bouys(missiles?) targeted and left to rot at tons of locations I seem to have read as a . . . possible thing.   Deep space tracking stations thrown on random asteroids across the known world ? :S
In conjunction with a patrol fleet or two, or five, I figured I'd be able to pickup npr movement with a fair chance.

. . . or should I skip this line of thinking and just rush in guns blazing? fog of war sure seems quite foggy :(

Micromanagment ad nausem makes my teeth hurt, setting up elegant workflows with orders for three hours that'll save me 30 minutes each future day in the same campain on the other hand. . .

Help me Aurorowanobis. . .

Problem 1: Don't forget that you can just create another fleet and drag the resupply ship into it. This would allow your RnR fleet to RTB.

I think the whole idea is that he wants the process to be automated.

Yes, it is aurora after all so there will be micro, just don't fancy the idea at all to have to micro an extra .  .  .  40.  .  .  60.  .  100.  .  .   sensor outposts; all the mechanics to make it work should be there, it is just some type of orders seem to be missing, like 'Resupply Fleet' instead of 'Join and resupply'.   Also the order delay not seeming to work properly.

What about space stations?

hxxp: aurora2.  pentarch.  org/index.  php?topic=8495.  msg106780#msg106780

This is my current, most plausible, route, sensor platforms with a space station keeping them maint.   Still it grows.  .  .   big and silly to have a recreational mod to go with each sensor platform+maint station, esp when the amount of SPs will likely.  .  .   grow tremendously and a more likely scenario is the RnR ship rolling by to entertain the troops.   Would work, if there was a 'Resupply fleet' order and delay order get working.

This is just one line of thinking, maybe it would just be better to just have DSTS spread out to get passive reads and send quick recons to investigate the contacts.
(Still a resupply fleet order without joining it can still be highly usefull)

Report the delay order in the bug thread. Does the min distance order work for you?

How about instead of sending the RNR/Maint units to your listening post, you tug the listening post to the recreation and maintenance team?

You can use the tug's orders to grab the ship, bring it to orbit of planet with base, wait, then bring it back to waypoint@jump point and drop it there.

You could use DSTS on asteroids and combine those with system patrol craft with active sensors that can go take a look at passive contacts that the DSTS spot. No need for that whole song and dance.

Otherwise, yeah you're in for quite some micromanagement.

Can you just lay down some big sensor missiles? How much sensitivity do you want here?

FWIW, my plan is to stick some commercial fighters on each jump point. Easy, cheap, no maintenance issues.

How do you make commercial fighters? Commercial engines are like 5 times larger than the smallest fighter?

Aside from fighter aspect of the post I don't see the issue with putting commercial ships with size 1 sensors on every paired jump point to see who jumps there without having to maintain them.
