The Earth Alliance
« on: May 04, 2020, 03:49:32 PM »
Background

2030
A decade of economic depression has devastated the world economy. Social upheaval has paralyzed the United States, and to a lesser degree, the European Union, with millions of citizens struggling with homelessness and food insecurity. With populist western governments looking inward, China and India take their places as the next world superpowers.

2040
Climate change has devastated the world's vulnerable populations. Desertification has decimated arable land throughout equatorial zones; water shortages, famine, and genocide kill millions throughout Africa, South America and the Middle East.

2050
The next major global conflict begins over water. India and China wage proxy wars throughout Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. The conflict flashes into a nuclear war that leaves hundreds of millions dead.

2070
The Earth's population has fallen from a peak of 8 billion in the 2020s to under 4 billion. Besides the direct casualties of war, climate change-caused food and water shortages have resulted in catastrophic population decline. Many major cities have been largely depopulated, and large swathes of the globe have reverted to subsistence agriculture.

2080
Humanity begins to rebound. The precipitous drop in industrialization and population, as well as nuclear winter, has eased the effects of global climate change. But huge swathes of the world have been largely depopulated; Earth's ecosystem begins to recover in these vast wildernesses that were once cities or farmland.

2090
Scientists, in a deep-drilling experiment into the Earth's mantle, discover the first evidence of stable trans-Uranium elements. These elements exhibit exotic matter properties. The study of what will become known as "Trans-Newtonian" elements will have widespread implications for physics and material science in the near future, and shape the course of future history.

2100 - The Alliance

The dominant political block on Earth is known simply as the Alliance. Beginning as an alliance of non-aligned powers in the last great war, these nations emerged from the Great Dying of the mid-21st century more or less intact, leading the world into recovery.

Major powers within the Alliance include:

France, Germany and England
The original European Union of the 20th and 21st centuries broke up in the chaos of the middle of the decade. France and Germany were two of the largest world powers to survive as cohesive nations, despite the effects of deindustrialization and population loss. Committed to neutrality in the war, Western Europe survives as one of the world's last major industrial heartlands. The United Kingdom disintegrated in the first half of the 21st century, but the Kingdom of England survives in a strong economic and military position.

Japan
Northern Japan was devastated by fallout carried by easterly prevailing winds from China and Russia, and the country was ravaged by famine. But many of the industrial centers in the south survived the war, and Tokyo remains one of the largest cities on the planet by population. Japan is Earth's second major industrial center, behind Europe.

The former United States and Canada
The turmoil of the mid-21st century led to widespread unrest, population collapse, and an eventual collapse of the US Federal Government. The northeast and the southeast are ruled by conflicting authoritarian successor states both claiming to be the true heirs to the former United States, and are not part of the Alliance.

The States of the Midwest, Great Plains, and much of Canada survive as a loose confederation, the North American Union, which controls a huge portion of remaining arable land, a very large rural population, as well as most of the surviving US nuclear arsenal. The NAU has emerged as the world's breadbasket.

The west coast states of British Columbia, Oregon, Washington, Idaho & what remains of California have formed their own federation as the Pacific Partnership, known commonly as Cascadia, and are the Alliance's main center of research & development.

The South American Federation
Brazil and most of the Amazon states disintegrated due to desertification and population collapse. Chile and Argentina survived as the most powerful economies in the southern hemisphere, and were founding members of the Alliance. The South American Federation is one of the densest population centers remaining, having absorbed millions of refugees from the rest of the continent, as well as the Australian and African diaspora - Australia having been rendered largely uninhabitable by climate change, and Africa devastated by the war.

Indian city-states
The former governments of China & India were wiped out during the war. A few cities, particularly in the south of the country, survived the nuclear fire, and absorbed vast numbers of refugees. After the war, these city-states became Alliance protectorates on humanitarian grounds and later full members.

The Republic of China
Taiwan was one of the major flashpoints of the Indo-Chinese war, but, with assistance from the Indian military, managed to repel invasion and outlive both governments. Having taken in many millions of refugees, the country is now managing resettlement and restoration of much of mainland east Asia.

Armed forces of the Alliance - the Army
The alliance maintains a standing army, operating independently of its member states' armed forces.

Rank Structure - Army Officers
Field Marshal
General
Lieutenant General
Major General
Brigadier General
Colonel
Lieutenant Colonel
Major
Captain
Lieutenant
2nd Lieutenant

Organization
The Alliance Army stands at a mere 3 brigades in 2100. With the Alliance in place, and most of the rest of the world in ruins, there is no reason for a large standing army. The Alliance nevertheless maintains 2 light infantry brigades and a mechanized infantry brigade, each commanded by a Brigadier General:

Light Infantry Brigade

A light infantry brigade is composed of a headquarters Element, four infantry battalions, and support elements, including artillery and logistics elements.

Infantry Battalion

The most basic infantry element is the squad. 9 soldiers make up a rifle squad, three rifle squads and a weapons squad consisting of a pair of general-purpose machine guns and a pair of anti-armor teams, plus four soldiers for the platoon HQ, make up a platoon.

Three infantry platoons and a weapons platoon make a Company. The weapons platoon consists of a pair of anti-armor teams, a pair of heavy machine gun teams, and a pair of mortars.

A battalion is the smallest element capable of independent operation, commanded by a Colonel. Each infantry battalion is composed of 5 infantry companies and a weapons company. Each infantry company is in turn composed of 3 infantry platoons and a weapons platoon.

Five infantry companies and a weapons company make up a battalion. The weapons company is equipped with additional heavy mortars, anti-tank weapons, heavy machine guns, a fire direction element, and a pair of man-portable anti-air missile launchers.

Mechanized Infantry Brigade

A mechanized infantry brigade is similarly made up of four mechanized infantry battalions, plust supporting artillery, logistics, and air defense.

Mechanized Infantry Battalion

Each mechanized infantry battalion is made up of a pair of mechanized infantry companies, a pair of tank companies, and a headquarters company including a pair of light self-propelled AA systems and a reconaissance element.

A tank company consists of three platoons, each with four main battle tanks, plus two command tanks.

A mechanized infantry company consists of three mechanized infantry platoons, a pair of command IFVs, and a pair of mortar carriers. Each platoon has 4 IFVs total, and three infantry squads.

Nice - posting to watch! Looks like 2100 is a popular year these days  ;D Is this a single PC Earth start, or are there NPR's? Lore is vaguely similar to the one I'm working on, same year too, but with no Human NPR's unless I misread the post? Cheers!
"Boop!" goes the thermonuclear missile salvo

There's only 1 player race. There are NPRs, but none in Sol.

The Trans-Newtonian Age

In 2095, researchers from Oregon State University demonstrate using the exotic-matter properties of gallicite to generate a field of "negative mass" and thus almost nullify a body's inertia. Further research indicates that this field interacts with a previously undreamed-of dimension of 'fluidic space', known more poetically as 'aether'. An object under the influence of such a field can be subjected to any arbitrary force, but due to interactions with fluidic space, requires a proportionate energy input in order to move in realspace without the field collapsing and causing whatever is in it to violently self-disassemble. Essentially, a formerly science-fiction 'anti-gravity' device is now within the realm of possibility, if not yet practicality.

By 2099, although the technology is only in its infancy, early applications of Trans-Newtonian technology have already revolutionized space travel. With a TN field generator, the tyranny of the rocket equation has been banished forever; a conventional rocket engine can put a capsule in orbit with an unimaginably tiny fraction of fuel to payload. But the field generator is not strong enough to render trans-Newtonian vessels immune to aerodynamic forces, meaning that large trans-Newtonian spacecraft will have to be built in orbit. Work begins on orbital facilities to construct such ships, and open up the solar system to exploration and colonization. Any surviving space programs of individual Alliance member states are incorporated into the Alliance Space Force, to manage the manned exploration and exploitation of the solar system. Shanon Staniford is named Chief of Operations.

By November 2100, Trans-Newtonian technology is mature enough to have widespread applications throughout Earth's industry, although research continues.

In March 2101, construction begins of the first utility vessels equipped with experimental TN field generators:

The first TN vessels to actually enter service are the Endeavor-class survey ships. Earth scientists believe that Earth's available Trans-Newtonian elements will only sustain industrial production for a few decades, making exploiting extraterrestrial resources a necessity. Four of these survey craft will be built to survey the inner solar system for Trans-Newtonian resources: Endeavor, Challenger, Voyager, and Intrepid.

By January 2102, construction has begun on a permanent lunar colony, with the first colonists embarking in March. Later that month, a civilian mining operation is established on Mercury. With Trans-Newtonian spacecraft and technology now in the hands of the private sector, the need for an international police force to patrol the spacelanes will become inevitable. That responsibility is part of the ASF's mandate, although an armed patrol force is a long ways off.

August of 2102 sees the creation of the first practical nuclear thermal rocket engines. Combined with the TN field generator technology, they open up the outer solar system to exploration, mining, and colonization.

Survey Report - September 2102

By this time, the planets of the inner solar system as far out as Jupiter and about half of the asteroid belt have been surveyed. Mercury and Luna are particularly resource-rich, while Venus, Mars, and most of the Jovian moons are devoid of TN elements.

Survey Report - Luna
Duranium: 377,138 1.0
Mercassium: 1788,872 1.0
Vendarite: 173,783 0.8
Corundium: 2,553,726 0.7

Survey Report - Mercury
Duranium: 6,877,572 0.5
Tritanium: 5,039,090 0.7
Vendarite: 5,149,216 1.0
Gallicite: 5,835,076 0.9

Mining operations began on Luna soon after colonization, while Mercury is home to a modest civilian mining operation.

Scientists are still searching for abundant sources of Neutronium, Corbomite, Boronide, Sorium, and Uridium. Moderate quantities have been found on comets and asteroids.

The First Wave of Exploration

Civilian miners are already working on Mercury; an actual colony starts construction in November. The next three years see a buildup of infrastructure and mines on resource-rich Mercury and the Moon, while the Endeavor-class survey ships chart the asteroid belt.

In January 2105, construction begins on a Mars colony. The Alliance forsees the possibility of unrest on one of Earth's colonies, so plans for a troop transport capable of transporting an entire battalion are drafted:

Code: [Select]
TT-1 class Troop Transport      8,774 tons       69 Crew       243.1 BP       TCS 175    TH 125    EM 0
712 km/s      Armour 1-37       Shields 0-0       HTK 26      Sensors 0/0/0/0      DCR 1      PPV 0
MSP 17    Max Repair 20 MSP
Troop Capacity 5,000 tons     Cargo Shuttle Multiplier 1
Lieutenant Commander    Control Rating 1   BRG
Intended Deployment Time: 3 months

Commercial Nuclear Thermal Engine  EP62.5 (2)    Power 125.0    Fuel Use 11.18%    Signature 62.5    Explosion 5%
Fuel Capacity 100,000 Litres    Range 18.3 billion km (298 days at full power)

This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes

Three such ships are commissioned in March 2106.

In September 2108,  the Alliance completes the full conversion of its industry to Trans-Newtonian technology. The second industrial revolution is in full swing. TN tech enables the restoration of large swathes of Earth's surface devastated by war, and holds the promise of terraforming other planets and moons.

By January 2110, Earth's population has recovered to 4.5 billion. 21 million people now live on the moon, 11.6 million on Mercury; 9 million on Mars, and about 200,000 total on Jupiter's moons Callisto, Europa, Io, and Ganymede combined.

8 February 2112
Physicist Kylie Closson's team publishes their research on wormholes. Although theorized for many years, the exotic matter properties of Trans-Newtonian materials may offer the means to create or manipulate wormholes, by which means faster-than-light travel may be possible. Their study generates little interest or excitement at first, but will soon be recognized as perhaps the important discovery in human history.

In early March 2113, the first survey vessels equipped with nuclear thermal rocket engines are launched, enabling the exploration of the outer solar system. Six geosurvey ships are built, as are six gravsurvey ships. These ships are equipped with sophisticated equipment capable of charting the complicated interactions of the sun and planets' gravitational fields, with the hope of experimentally confirming Closson's theory.

An experimental "jump ship" is rushed into production, being launched on 29 August 2114. Under command of CDR Tosya Shubin, the scout makes for the first charted jump point. On 9 October 2114, the first experimental FTL jump is made successfully, instantly transporting Shubin's scout in a distant red dwarf star system. By referencing known pulsars, the ship fixes her position as the Lalande 21185 system, an M-type star in the Ursa Major constellation, about 8 light-years from Earth. They linger in the system for about an hour, taking observations of the three orbiting exoplanets, and then return back through the jump point to report their success. Lalande 21185 has a pair of Venus-like planets, one over twice Earth's diameter, the other the size of Mars, and a third, desert planet with a thin CO2 atmosphere that is nearly Mars' twin - a possible site for colonization.

The second jump point is explored in December 2114, and the system beyond is identified as Luhman 16 - a binary brown dwarf system, and third-closest to the sun at about 6.5 light years. Luhman 16-B has two planets, a frigid Mars-sized world with a trace nitrogen/methane atmosphere, and a gas giant about the size of Neptune.

Likewise, further exploration requires a long-endurance, jump drive-equipped vessel capable of independent exploration. Six such ships are launched in November 2115: Armstrong, Gagarin, Glenn, Shephard, Leonov, Tereshkova. A second batch of ships is laid down immediately afterward: Carpenter, Cooper, Grissom, Komarov, Schirra, Titov.

In January 2116, Tereshkova explores a jump point in the Luhman 16 system, reaching the system of Groombridge 34. This binary pair of Red Dwarfs has the largest system of planets yet discovered, with dozens of moons, asteroids, and four potential terraforming sites. Groombridge 34-A II in particular, is an Earth-sized world with a thin atmosphere with trace oxygen content, the first hint at an alien biosphere.

That month, the first orbital terraforming platform is finished and terraforming of the moon begins. The alliance plans to place on or more such platforms in orbit of every human colony, although the actual act of terraforming will take many years.

In order to expand into new star systems, jump points have to be stabilized, enabling any ship equipped with a TN field generator to transit them. Three stabilization stations are to be built, designed to be towed to the jump point and taking about a year to stabilize both sides. The first station is commissioned in April, and sets to work stabilizing the Sol-Lalande 21185 jump point.

With faster-than-light travel a reality, Alliance member states agree that a need exists to prepare for the possibility that intelligent, space-faring alien life exists, and that military confrontation may be possible. Even without that, the need exists for an armed space force capable of keeping the spacelanes clear of piracy and insurrection. The first armed spacecraft in the ASF's inventory are a dozen missile-armed fast-attack craft, with a total of four squadrons of 12 authorized. The first squadron enters service in December 2116.

In March 2117, the first stable jump point link to another system, Lalande 21185, is completed. Alliance Freighters immediately are ordered to set up tracking stations and infrastructure on Lalande 21185 III for colonization. The cold desert planet is very similar to Mars, with a diameter of 6,800 km, 0.33g gravity, polar ice caps with about 14% surface water coverage,  and a surface temperature of -47.8 degrees C. The CO2/Nitrogen atmosphere is thicker than Mars', with a pressure of 0.1 atm. The planet is tidally-locked and tectonically dead, however, with the surface dominated by wind-swept desert.

With the similarity to the Martian environment, the Alliance chooses the name Nerio for the planet, after the war goddess and Mars' consort in mythology. The first colonists arrive in July 2117.

The second colonization target is Luhman 16-B I. The planet has a diameter of 7,400 km, a trace nitrogen/methane atmosphere, gravity of 0.23g, no tectonics or magnetic field, a surface temperature of -198 degrees C, and orbits extremely close to its parent brown dwarf, at 15.1m km. This dark, frozen, inhospitable planet is named Acheron. Colonists arrive in January 2118.

The Alliance recognizes the need for long-endurance, high-capability armed spacecraft as mankind spreads throughout the stars.

The first Pandora-class destroyers and Galatea-class missile destroyers are laid down in orbit in late November 2118, and enter service in late 2119. Three Galatea-class destroyers are part of the initial order (Galatea, Adrastea, Amalthea) and five Pandora-class (Pandora, Desdemona, Callisto, Caliban, Ariel). The Pandora-class is intended as a general-purpose patrol ship with high speed, decent endurance, and devent firepower with a single spinal laser and three quick-firing railguns that can serve as point defense. The Galatea-class keeps a single railgun and trades the rest of the armament for twenty missile launchers, giving the planned fleet a degree of stand-off capability.

Re: The Earth Alliance

State of the Alliance, 1 January 2120

Earth's population continues to recover, having reached 5 billion for the first time since the mid-21st century.

Earth's colonies are as follows:

Mercury: 44.58 million
Mars: 29.47 million
Luna: 25.6 million
Callisto: 12.64 million
Io: 7.11 million
Europa: 6.32 million
Ganymede: 3 million
Nerio (Lalande 21185): 0.46 million
Acheron: (Luhman 16-B): 0.24 million

Terraforming is proceeding at Luna, Mercury, and Mars.

Alliance freighters are busy constructing a spaceport on Nerio to use as a future fleet base, as it is much closer to unexplored space than Sol. The Armstrong-class science vessels are proving to have insufficient endurance to deal with the vast distance between Earth and the new frontier.

Lalande 21185 and Luhman 16 are fully explored and now inhabited; Luhman 16 is devoid of minerals, while Lalande 21185 II, a Venusian hothous world, has most in quantity but very poor availability.

Gliese 674 is also bereft of minerals but has a single decent terraforming candidate, another tiny, frigid tidally-locked world.

FL Virginis has a pair of surveyed terraforming candidates, and a few scattered, unremarkable mineral deposits.

Groombridge 34, while isolated, has high mineral quantity and availability scattered throughout its many asteroids and moons, as well as four decent terraforming prospects, making it a high priority for settlement.

Stein 2051 is unsurveyed. A binary system, the white dwarf primary is planetless while the red dwarf secondary has four planets and many moons, including two good terraforming candidates. Unfortunately, the secondary orbits at a distance of 5.8 billion km, on top of being the most distant system yet discovered; survey and colonization will take a long time.

The Alliance Space Force's armed units stand at four squadrons of 12 fast attack craft, as well as five destroyers and three missile destroyers.

Alliance priorities are as follows:
Establish fuel and maintenance depot in Lalande 21185, in order to extend survey efforts
Settle Groombridge 34, FL Virginis, and Gliese 674
Extend terraforming operations
Construct orbital mining platforms throughout Sol and Groombridge 34
Strengthen space forces to 16 each DDG and DD
Advance exploration

In order to fuel - literally - human exploration and expansion, several fuel harvester bases are constructed and towed to Saturn's orbit. Unfortunately, no Sorium-rich gas giants have been found in the jump chain leading out from Earth.

2122 sees a few major discoveries. The Herschel 5173 is a binary system with a K-type primary. The second planet is a mineral-rich world, which, although frigid and tidally-locked, has a breathable atmosphere and abundant water, making it an ideal colonization target.

Another system, Procyon, has one of the most remarkable planets yet discovered. Procyon-A III is about Mars-sized, with 60% of the surface covered in liquid oceans, is not tidally-locked and has a thick nitrogen/oxygen atmosphere. The atmosphere does have a high carbon dioxide content, but is otherwise breathable; if that were removed the planet would be an ideal colonization target. Long-distance observations indicate the planet has its own biosphere, the first confirmation of the existence of alien life. The question of whether intelligent life exists elsewhere in the galaxy continues to be considered, but not for much longer.

In August 2123, while completing a survey of the Gamma Pavonis system, an Alliance science ship detects an unknown sensor contact at the Gamma Pavonis-NN3704 jump point. The vessel matches no known configuration or ELINT signature. Fortunately, the alien ship takes no hostile action. The science staff on board have trained for first contact situations, and begin attempts to open communications.

The translation process takes only two weeks, leading some within naval intelligence to surmise that the aliens had prior knowledge of Earth languages & culture. They identify themselves as the Stofler corporation, and appear to be similarly technologically developed to Earth. They seem to be amenable to peaceful coexistence, although colonizing Gamma Pavonis puts them within two jumps of the Earth colony at Gliese 674.

Likewise, just in case the aliens have nefarious intentions, the existing space force is to be upgraded to the latest Ion propulsion technology. In order to project power, however, humanity needs the ability to refuel and maintain ships beyond the immediate vicinity of Earth. For now, a single starbase will be constructed and towed to Gliese 674, in order to facilitate exploration.

Likewise, the current Armstrong-class science ships have proved too short-ranged to sustain long distance exploration. By replacing their engines with new, higher efficiency models, the class's range is doubled.

New Colonies
Between 2020-2025, several new worlds have been settled.

Groombridge 34 is a binary red dwarf system. The secondary orbits at a distant 23.6 billion km, but is easily reachable by jumping through Lagrange points.

Groombridge 34-A II, later called Stern's World, is relative hospitable, being slightly larger than Earth, with gravity of about 0.5g, a thin atmosphere of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and trace oxygen, and 15% of its surface covered in water ice. Average temperature is -64 degrees C.

Groombridge 34-A III is smaller and colder, at -139 degrees, but has more available water, with 63% surface ice coverage, a hydrogen-helium atmosphere, but is a rarity for a red dwarf's planet as it is not tidally locked, but does have a very slow rotation with a 70-Earth day-long day. Named Ratri after the vedic goddess associated with night.

Groombridge 34-B II is a dwarf planet smaller than Luna, with surface gravity of 0.194g, but has abundant surface ice, no atmosphere, and a mild -59 degree surface temperature. The first colonists chose the name Elysium.

Groombridge 34-B III is larger, but less dense, covered in 77% surface ice, and far colder, at -166 degrees. Named Hrimnir after a frost giant in Norse mythology.

Gliese 674 III, now called Anchorage, is about 20% smaller than Mars, very cold at -140 degrees, tidally locked, with about 26% surface ice coverage, and no resources or atmosphere. Nevertheless, it occupies an important strategic position.

FL Virginis-A I orbits extremely close to its red dwarf star, at only 1.98 million km, with a surface temperature of 357 degrees and gravity half of Earth's. Nevertheless, the planet supports a colony. Named Sekhmet after the Egyptian fire and sun goddess.

FL Virginis-A II is much colder, at -90 degrees, but has abundant water ice, with about 80% coverage, a nitrogent atmosphere with trace oxygen, gravity of 0.45g, and is about 20% smaller than Earth. Named New Belgium by passengers of first colony ship.

Other colonies
The QY Aurigae system, while lacking any planets, does have a close-orbiting comet with a listening post to monitor the approach to the Gliese 674 jump point from Gamma Pavonis.
