Update 3.5 - Ethics and traditions
« on: September 20, 2020, 10:11:21 PM »
Calling this an update would be a bit presumptuous so i'll call it a semi-update, hence the 3.5. Problem is, I should make another semi-update or I'll end up with "update 4.5"  :'(

As you may know i am quite busy with my current ! KICKTARTER CAMPAIGN - BUY ! - BUY ! - BUUUY !!!!

But this sunday I couldn't hold myself to setup the data structures and code some basics stuffs related to population types (and social classes), education and ethics.

While I have something to show (found / made some icons and created the UI layout) here is a bit of informations on how ethics and traditions will work.

A while ago, I have created the policy system (Details here (disclaimer : dark humour)) , and added a bunch of exemples.

Adopting policies will shift one or several city ethics toward a value. The player will be free to change any policies but if the state ethics shift too much from the population tradition (represented as a colored bar) it will generate some dissent among it.

Education will serve multiple purposes. One of it is to shift the tradition value of the populations to the state ethics.

Therefore, big political changes in contradiction to the populations traditions or immigration from a culturaly divergent planet will cause unhappiness in the population as very different ethics will blend into the existing one.

Most ethics on the screenshot are self-explanatory but the latest needs some clarifications : specieism is how a civilisation treats other species, be it sentient or not, in the first bunch of policies I mentionned, it may be affected by banning meat.

My knee jerk reaction is to change the name "specieism" to xenophobia/philia but I'm uncertain if the effect on non-sentient species would be clear by the name alone.

That was my thought as well then I have chosen specieism / multi-specieism (made-up word) to reflect a broader ethic. I want to simulate species / civilisations  that deeply abhor the prospect of hurting other living being and not just a tendency to tolerate different species. Such semantic broaden the initially limited spectrum of xeno-phobia/phillia.

I may be completely wrong though.

I would go with xenophobia/phillia as well, but I am influenced by playing Stellaris.

Xenophilia in Stellaris affects non-sentient lifeforms as well .You can prohibit killing them and xenophobes can hunt the space critters for money. There are also some events that can be solved in certain ways only if you have or do not have xenophobia or xenophilia.

Hey, French mate!  ;D

You can also use Greek and show to the Anglo-Saxon world the beauty of our roots (among our other roots made of Celts, Latin, Frank, Burgondes and a few others  ;D )

Oh thanks, I didn't know that greek word, I read this word was invented in 2006.

but anyway I think I'll chose xeno phobia/phillia for the sake of clarity. I have observed a consensus for using this root and I agree with it.
