Ships of the IJN, Sept. 2024 (19)
« on: November 02, 2008, 02:31:44 PM »
Ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy
September, 2024

The IJN favors specialized designs for its fleet, and because of this has two different cruiser designs, one for missile combat and one for close-in beam combat.  While this strategy has allowed the IJN to produce designs that are optimized for their intended role, it has also reduced the number of cruisers it could deploy due to the necessity of switching its largest shipyard from producing one cruiser to the other.  The IJN has won approval from the Imperial government for an expansion of shipyard capacity so that beam and missile cruisers can be built simultaneously.

The IJN is largely satisfied with its current designs, in spite of its recent loss during the Battle of the Moon. The IJN’s highest leaders were largely successful in blaming the loss on the civilian government and the impossible situation it was placed in by those leaders, and as a result the Navy sees no reason to alter its designs.

The Navy is currently in the middle of a large-scale program to improve its laser weaponry, and plans on refitting its cruisers and destroyers with the new weaponry once it is developed.

The Akagi is the IJN’s principle close-range combatant.  Like the Zuikaku destroyer, the Akagi is equipped with the Triple 12 cm Laser Turret and a dual purpose fire control that served as both an anti-ship and an anti-missile targeting system.  Because of the size and mass of the turret the cruiser can only carry two, but the IJN feels that the flexibility imparted by the turret overcomes the lower overall number of weapons.

All Akagi class units were upgraded to Akagi Mark 2’s.

The Mark 2 version includes the replacement of the nuclear pulse engines with Ion engines, and the replacement of the older high density uranium armor with composite armor.  The replacement of the armor belt allowed the designers to upgrade the armor belt’s thickness, improving the survivability of the ship in close combat.

All existing units of this class were destroyed by the Reich and the Alliance during the Battle of the Moon.  Since then, the IJN has launched nine new units of this class.

The Kongo is the IJN’s primary missile combatant.  This design has a large broadside of anti-ship missiles but must be escorted by anti-missile platforms at all times due to its lack of anti-missile weaponry.

The failure of the IJN’s Kongo class to destroy any Russian ships during the Battle of Titan was blamed on the IJN’s missile of the time, and as a result the Standard Missile was replaced with the Long Lance Anti-Ship missile.

All units of the Kongo class were upgraded to Kongo Mark 2’s.

The Mark 2 version of the Kongo includes a refit of the engine spaces and armor belt, as with the Akagi class.  The Kongo Mark 2’s of the fleet performed well during the Battle of the Moon, and the IJN has since built more ships of this class.

Eleven units of this class are in service as of September 2024, and four more are under construction.

The Zuikaku class was designed and built to escort the vulnerable Kongo class and protect it from enemy missiles.  It performed well against Soviet missiles in the Battle of Titan, and although the Zuikaku’s of the Home Fleet were unable to protect the Akagi cruisers of the beam strike group during the Battle of the Moon, this has been attributed to the overwhelming force of enemy missiles, rather than any deficiency in the basic design.

All Zuikaku’s have been refitted to the Mark 2 standard.

As with the bigger ships, the Zuikaku Mark 2 involves a replacement of the engine spaces and the armor belt.

Currently, the IJN Command Staff is debating the wisdom of refitting the Zuikaku with the Mark 2 turrets now in development, or leaving them as is and replacing them over time with a larger and more capable escort ship.

There are thirty-six Zuikaku Mark 2’s in service with the IJN as of September 2024.
