Saving the Game - Frequency/Backups
« on: January 19, 2025, 10:26:16 PM »
I've recently been getting back into playing Aurora, and I'm wondering what everyone's 'strategy'/plan for saving the game is? Typically, I've found myself making a subfolder in the folder for Aurora and then copying in the Database file each time I save so that if anything happens I can go back to a previous save (yes I know the SaveBackup and PreviousSaveBackup files exist but I don't want to rely solely on them).

Perhaps in direct contradiction to the ideal behind creating backup saves, I will admit that I tend to go at least an hour or two in-between saves (sometimes more) and I feel like that'll come back to bite me in the future. That's enough about what I do when I save the game though, what do all of (you) do? Do you save frequently and backup each database? Do you save 'never' save for when you end a session of game-play and hope for the best, do you just keep clicking that save icon every few construction cycles? Do you do something else?

I create a very tiny, non-functional ship called the Reminder class and give it an order to send me a message once a year to save the game. This may happen more frequently if I am also using Excel to track my minerals, which I have done both monthly and semi-annually.

Depends on speed of gameplay. I do it before every major action, and in my "big" games every 4-12 months or so. Making backups, not just saving, that is.

I usually can't play for very long at a time, so my games take months.  I created a "backups" folder in Aurora and before I start for the day I use 7zip to make an archive of aurora.db named for the last day I was able to play (the change date of the file).  So each 7z file is around 13M instead of 85M.

If you are concerned about losing save points then save before major actions and make an archive of all three databases every third time you save.
