I am lost on Decoy launchers. Help please.
« on: May 13, 2025, 02:49:31 PM »
So I am building a ship of 15,000 tons. So how do you guys figure this for decoy launchers?
If I get this right, I need eight size 10 decoy launchers. That would be enough for a 16,000 tons ship right?
Or do I do one size 80 decoy launcher?

Do you also have to build the decoy missile to the launcher size in your ord factory?

It's more a question of how much space you want to devote to them.
The size of the decoy depends more on how much you want to increase the chance that your opponent's missile will hit the decoy and not the ship.
This is determined by the signature of the decoy the bigger it is the greater the chance it will shield the ship.

In your case, if one decoy is launched.
The chance of the missile hitting the ship is:
15000/(15000+1600)=90,36%

Without taking ECCM and ECM into account.

Minimal Decoy Size is 5.
The only issue is how many decoys will be launched.
Where you have 1600 in the formula, this is the total signature of the decoys fired.

I still do not understand even after reading Steve's posts.
Can 1 decoy launcher launch more than 1 decoy missile per incoming missile strike?
Example if I put 1 size 10 launcher on my ship can it fire 8 decoy missiles or do I need 8 launchers to fire 8 decoy missiles?

DO I have to also build the decoy missiles? Do I have to add a magazine to hold them?

I am also confused because I have ships I built already with no decoy launchers on them.
Yet the game reports back that they have decoys on board?
How? What size? Do I actually have to build decoy missiles?
Why do I already have them on ships now when I never designed or built a decoy missile or a launcher?

I have never used box launchers before in this game either. So Doing more reading I understand now a box launcher holds one missile.
They do not reload in space. So no magazine. So then if I want to launch 8 size 10 decoy missiles I would need 8 decoy (box) launchers.
Or I could put 1 size 70 decoy launcher on the ship to cover the size of 15,000 tons. Give a decent chance to divert 1 missile from an incoming strike.
So now. If I have this correct I need to devote the space on the ship for a size 70 launcher to decoy a single incoming missile.
And then that is all I get out of that space used.

Hmm devoting that space to point defense weapons that get multiple chances to hit incoming missiles sounds like a better use of that space.
Or am I still missing something?

I have way more questions about this than answers.

Each decoy launcher is a box launcher and fires once without reloading at a base or in a hanger. So to have 8 decoys you need 8 decoy launchers
Of course you have to build decoy missiles for the same reason you build normal missiles they are missiles and have an economic cost

If a ship has no decoy launchers it has no decoys, you may have put some decoy missiles in the magazine but they are decorative and do nothing. If you have not added decoy launchers or put pointless decoys in the magazine there are no decoys onboard. If you think there are post the screen shot which is confusing you and someone can explain what is wrong.

Decoys do not decoy 1 missile, they decoy a proportion of the incoming missile wave, if that is 1 missile you probably wasted them. They are intended to help survive when someone launches a wave of 300 missiles from box launchers at you.

So your interpretation is wrong as if it were correct they would be pointless

I suggest building some ships with decoys, then building some other ships with missile launchers and firing missiles at the ships with decoys to see how it works

Ok thank You I get it now. At least the reason why to use them. And I get the logistics using them.
