Age of Stars - Part 1

The Year is 2075,
a New Age is Dawning...

Welcome to the Age of Stars!

FACTIONS

The United States of Northern America: Corporate Government.

Population: 500,000,000
Industrial Power;
- 1,300 conventional industry
- 8 Research labs
Military POWER;
- 20x missile base
- 6x LTA
- 12x LTI

Throughout the 21st century the North American government drove itself to total financial collapse through its continued attempts at using aggressive foreign policy to 'export' democracy. In January, 2013 the most powerful eighteen corporations of North America joined together to form a Mega-Corporation which was appropriately dubbed 'Mega-Core' by the public (after the most powerful of the original corporations, 'Core Mining'). Feeding upon the growing financial crisis brought on by a series of costly wars Mega-Core provided the government with many high-interest loans while consolidating the rest of their assets in overseas investments. Eventually the North American government could no longer handle its ever-increasing debt (and the funds from Mega-Core dried up), while they attempted to pursue every avenue available to them to cancel the debt Mega-Core was there to block every attempt. After realizing that they had insufficient power to effect any kind of significant change, even in their own backyard, the North American government did the only thing they still could do, they absconded leaving Mega-Core to take the throne. On Friday, September 8, 2023 the last of the conventional government stepped down and Mega-Core made the White House the new center of their growing empire, the era of democracy was over, the sole pursuit of financial gain would now drive the country forward, capitalism in its purest form.

From the eve of the September, 2023 takeover, the new corporate government of the United States of Northern America moved to peacefully secure new resources for the homeland in what has come to be known as a resurrection of the old colonial system. In 2026 ties with Israel were strengthened after a treaty (the Jerusalem accord) was drawn up and signed for official mutual protection and trade. The corporate government of the United States of Northern America held the belief (as their predecessors did) that Israel's presence in the Middle East was tied to their level of influence in the region. Diplomatic talks with the Republic of Panama began the year after, at the start of 2027. Although at first receptive to the diplomacy and trade offers of the United States of Northern America, Panama would ultimately prove to be difficult to bring back to the North American sphere of influence. After years of hesitation on Panama's part, the government of Panama finally bowed to regional pressure during the later half of 2031, ruling that it was not in Panama's best interests to continue building relations with North America at the expense of it's relations with the rest of South and Central America. However the corporate government of the United States of Northern America had all-but given up on Southern American expansion at this point and had instead set their sights on the southern half of Africa. The collapse of several major economies in Africa had caused an unimaginable (even for Africa) period of instability. Over the course of the next four decades the United States of Northern America slowly encouraged the economies of friendly African nations, increasing their influence in the region to beyond the levels they had reached during the Cold War. Controlled parts of Southern Africa provided North America with raw resources and cheap labor as well as new markets to fuel their economy. However the United States of Northern America's campaign of recruiting Southern African nations and rebuilding their economies was not without its consequences. The People's Republic of China began to push Communism in South African nations friendly to them, while traditionally not bothered with world affairs outside of Asia the People's Republic of China could not afford to let their traditional rivals once again successfully expand their global influence.

The European Union: Imperial Council.

The unification of Europe into a single, solid political body was not a new idea, however the reality of the European Union holding any real power would not be realized until 2058. The collapse of the North American government and the new direction of its foreign policy had left a divided Europe weak. At first the European Union was unsuccessful at preventing its members from continuing age old feuds as well as pursuing their own economic and political goals. The violent rise of Andrei Nikolaev to power in neighboring Russia and his bloody campaigns to expand Russia's empire proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that unless Europe could really come together under the European Union and work together their would be no stopping the Red Tide. Sure enough in late 2052 the tanks of the Soviet Union were once again rolling upon Europe. The Ukraine fell in 2053 as the armies of the self-declared Second Union of Soviet Socialist Republics swarmed over the border, shortly followed by the surrender of Belarus in 2054. Frantic talks between local powers were called for in Munich, Germany during 2054 by both the German and Polish governments. However many European nations still did not take the Russian threat seriously, believing that the Second Union of Soviet Socialist Republics would stop at Eastern Europe, not bothering to push further westward and the talks failed to reach any significant conclusion. For a time it seemed that this was the case and between 2054 and 2057 the Second Union of Soviet Socialist Republics withdrew many troops from the European border to fight in their wars to South. However this new peace was not to last. In 2058 the Second Union of Soviet Socialist Republics' offensive into Europe was renewed with vigor and Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Romania and Poland all fell in a few months of each other. Talks were once again organized in 2058, this time in Paris, France and Every European power would attend. The result of the talks was that for the most part power passed from local European governments to a central imperial council that would preside over the European Union. The next day the imperial council issued an ultimatum to the Second Union of Soviet Socialist Republics: cease all offensives into European territory or the European Union would respond with nuclear force. Intending to test the new imperial councils resolve the Second Union of Soviet Socialist Republics ceased their attacks towards central Europe and instead began sweeping through the Balkans. The European Union responded by again issuing the warning that they were prepared to respond to the Second Union of Soviet Socialist Republics with nuclear force. Convinced of the European Unions lack of resolve to start a nuclear war the Second Union of Soviet Socialist Republics cut communications with the European Union and launched two major offensives, one into Slovakia and another into Hungary during the middle of the year of 2060. Several days after the offensive had begun the European Union launched a single nuclear missile from a nuclear silo in Eastern France which detonated on impact with the island of Novaya Zemlya North of the Russian mainland, devastating Russian nuclear testing sites and killing a handful of personnel working nuclear facilities in the area. the Second Union of Soviet Socialist Republics saw this as what it was, a warning shot and ceased all offensives into Europe, instead positioning high levels of ground forces along the new border with central Europe. the Second Union of Soviet Socialist Republics assessed that the best they could hope for in an all out nuclear war with the European Union was a Pyrrhic victory. As such the stalemate between these two major nuclear powers would stay in place right up until the beginning of 2075, with neither side willing to be the first to come forward and begin negotiations.

Nice Interesting start. Looking forward to see how the EU and the UK with its links to the far east, France with its links to the middle east fare through this.

I wonder what the Chinese will do in South America - Falklands anyone?

And we've not heard from the Bear up North yet...

Thank you for your enthusiasm, it makes it worthwhile to keep writing when I see that other people also enjoy this fiction!

I was in a rush before, needed to head off... I'm back to give a more comprehensive answer.

You're talking about the US I assume? Laws are only as strong as the authority put into place to enforce them. If you take the old feudal system for example. A king ran the show and he used laws and systems to keep other lords and nobles in their places. However their were plenty of nobles that given the opportunity rose up to challenge the laws, systems and even authority of the King! Corporations are a lot like nobles and the government a lot like a King, rather than a break from the old system of governance, how we run things in the modern world is simply an expansion of how we have done things in the past. It would not be implausible for powerful corporations to use their power to usurp a weak government given the opportunity and the will. A Western nations government is all-but run by big business already! The only reason we don't see corporations rise up and attempt to run things there own way is that corporations are usually driven by one rule and one rule alone and that rule is to chase the bottom dollar. It is very rare for conventional corporations to engage in unprofitable activities. What excites me about this fiction is that it very much is where we are heading in the future! No longer is the battlefield for the soldiers and Kings, for swords and shields, for glory! Now the battlefield is for CEO's and bankers, for briefcases and business portfolios, for profit!

In short the world as we know it is already heading in this direction... The world of 2075 will be a very different world to the world of 2010! The old laws may very well not apply by then. Is this a satisfactory answer?
