Ships of the Imperial Fleet and Guard 2359 (9)
« on: March 21, 2010, 08:36:41 AM »
Imperial Navy, 2359
The Navy has changed quite a bit over the last nine years.  Not only in terms of size and class designs, but in terms of organization and capabilities as well.  The Navy has become capable of interstellar force projection and independent operations far from home.

The reorganization of 2358 created independent, permanent, squadrons that can be deployed either singly or en mass depending on the situation.  Currently there are three Battle Squadrons and a Carrier Strike Group, detailed below:

1st Battle Group (Fleet Admiral Victor Tannenbaum)
This is the Empire’s “Home Fleet”, and is directly commanded by Fleet Admiral Tannenbaum from Terra.  Typically, this squadron remains in the Solar System and serves as a training ground for newly built ships.  Fleet Admiral Tannenbaum also commands the 1st Imperial Fleet, which includes the other naval groups listed below.

Currently the 1st BG has several units on out-system deployments to secure Verge and New Victoria.

3xState Flight III Class Battleship (Texas, Virginia, Washington)
3xEssex(C) Flight III Command Light Cruiser (Boston, Concord, Menotomy)
3xEssex Flight III Light Cruiser (Aurora, St. Augustine, Turtle Bay)
1xNimitz Flight II Bombardment Cruiser (Halsey)
1xTiconderoga Flight II Light Carrier (Norfolk)
9xLexington Flight III Frigate (Brunswick, Cambridge, Hampton, Kemps Landing, Lechmere Point, Narragansett Bay, Newburyport, Norfolk, Stonington)
20xPhoenix (AF-1/Flight II) Fighter (Squadrons: Pair-O-Dice and Duty Cats)

2nd Battle Group (Rear Admiral (Lower Half) Sir Kane Franklin)
This is a newly constituted battle group.  Currently it is assigned to the home system, however, the Navy is tentatively planning on assigning this squadron to rotate through Verge and New Victoria once maintenance facilities in those systems are complete.

1xState(C) Flight III class Command Battleship (North Carolina)
1xState Flight III class Battleship (Arizona)
3xEssex Flight III Light Cruiser (Charleston, Gloucester, Senecca)
1xNimitz Flight II class Bombardment Cruiser (Spruance)
4xLexington Flight III Frigate (Bristol, Montreal, Nassau, St. Johns)

3rd Battle Group (Rear Admiral (Upper Half) Sir Sam Craig)
This squadron was formed soon after the beginning of the current interstellar era, and has always been under the command of Admiral Sir Sam Craig.  The Emperor has referred to the 3rd as “The Sword of the Empire”, and Admiral Craig has adopted this as the squadron’s official motto.

1xState(C) Flight III class Command Battleship (California)
1xState Flight III Class Battleship (New York)
3xEssex Flight III Light Cruiser (Bunker Hill, Stalwart, Trafalgar)
1xNimitz Flight II class Bombardment Cruiser (Fletcher)
6xLexington Flight III Frigate (Chambly, Dorchester, Falmouth, Johnstown, Reedy River, Wilmington)

1st Carrier Strike Group (Vice Admiral Sir Isaac Gibbons)
The Imperial Navy is still experimenting with carrier/fighter tactics.  Originally, the carriers and their fighters were assigned to the various battle squadrons to support main force operations, however, it soon became clear that the fighters could be employed more effectively independently, so the 1st CSG was formed.  The Group is currently deployed in the Solar System.

1xEssex(C) Flight III class Command Light Cruiser (Saratoga)
3xEssex Flight III class Light Cruiser (Bloody Point, Boston Neck, Roxbury)
4xTiconderoga class Light Carrier (Ticonderoga, White Plains, Cumberland, Princeton)
1xNimitz Flight II Bombardment Cruiser (Nimitz)
5xLexington Flight III Frigate (McDowell’s Station, Philadelphia, Quaker Meadows, Rayborn Creek, Tappan Sea)
40xPhoenix (AF-1) Fighter (Squadrons: Pied Pipers, Emerald Knights, Flying Dragons, Black Lions)
40xPhoenix (AF-1/Flight II) Fighter (Squadrons: Jaguars, Tomahawks, Bear Aces, Starfighters)

Naval Transport Group
4xLanding(J) Flight III class Troop Transports (Gallipoli, Nassau, Suvla, Veracruz)

Imperial Survey Corps (Captain Aidan Griffiths)
The ISC is responsible for surveying newly discovered systems which have been cleared by the Imperial Navy.  ISC survey ships are all jump-capable and are intended to operate independently, although quite often they operate in pairs.

7xMagellan Flight II class Deep Space Survey (Grav) ships (Magellan, Raleigh, Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, Pizarro, Vespucci, Hawkins)

6xDrake Flight II class Geological Survey Ship (Drake, de Balboa, de Gama, Gilbert, Ponce De Leon, Grenville)

Imperial Guard (Rear Admiral (Upper Half) Francesca Sharpe)
The Imperial Guard has lost some political clout due to the massive expansion of the Navy.  This is in spite of the fact that the Guard is now more powerful than it was before with the addition of an assault destroyer taken from the former Verge government.  In the period immediately after the rebellion the Guard’s leaders had made several enemies within the Senate, and those enemies have effectively limited attempts to widen the Guard’s authority or expand the Guard’s battle line.

Imperial Guard 1st Detachment (Home Fleet)
The Guard’s 1st Detachment is a permanent orbital guard force for Terra.  At least some Imperial Guard ships are always stationed over Terra, no matter what else is going on.  This unit tends to be the primary Guard grouping, from which ships for other assignments are drawn.

1xEssex(C/G) Flight II class Command Light Cruiser (Prince William)
3xEmperor Flight II class Motherships (Emperor Michael, Emperor Edward, Emperor John II)

CLASS DESIGNS
First, a word about refits.  The Empire denotes improved versions of a class with the notation “Flight III” or “Flight IV”, indicating successive classes of the same basic design.  Typically all existing units will be refit to the new version as soon as possible, however, this is not always true and it will be noted below where it is not.  Variations within a Flight will be noted as follows: “Flight III/A” or “Flight III/B”.  Imperial redesigns have to date been focused on increasing the overall fleet speed, rather than on improving combat equipment or sensors.  This is changing, as more and more new systems have been developed by the Venusian research facilities.

For the most part, Imperial refits have been standard across classes:
Flight II: This refit introduced ICF drives, improving fleet speeds.  In addition, naval warships received ECCM-2 equipment with this refit.

Flight III: This refit introduced magnetic confinement fusion drives, again increasing fleet speed.

Note: This document only includes designs currently in service.  Older designs have been detailed elsewhere.

The Planet class is the largest Imperial warship designed or built in almost two hundred years.  The old Empire built even larger warships, but at this time the Empire has no plans to look into Monitors.

Current plans are to assign the first Planet class units to the 1st Battle Group, and thereafter to assign newly built units to new battle groups, rather than mixing them into existing units.  This decision was made because this design would slow the existing battle groups down too much, and so instead “Heavy Battle Groups” will be created.

This is the Navy’s premier warship, and it is seen as the cornerstone of the battle groups.  The Navy Board is considering upgrading one of the cruiser shipyards to produce battleships in order to increase production of this hull.  No decision has been made yet.

The III/B version contains many new systems developed by Venusiain scientists.  The shielding, missile launchers, magazines, power plants, and EM detection sensors have all been improved.  In addition, the cruising range and engineering capacity have been improved, taking advantage of space savings elsewhere.  There has been no decision made about general refits, although they are unlikely.  It is more probable that only new units will be built to this standard.

The space savings realized by installing more efficient newer systems has been devoted to increased magazine capacity, larger fuel tanks, and an enlarged engineering section.

This is the Empire’s main line warship.  This unit is intended to stand toe to toe with the nastiest ships any enemy could field and slug it out.  The decision was made early on to focus on missile weaponry and to not include beam emplacements.  This decision was and is controversial, however, it gave this unit a very large broadside capability.

This design is classed as a military vessel for maintenance purposes

This class is the workhorse of the Navy’s battle groups, and can be found in many roles.  It is the smallest warship thought capable of independent action by the Navy’s commanders and can quite often be found alone or operating in conjunction with a frigate.

As with other Flight III refits, this class received improved magnetic confinement fusion drives improving its overall speed.

The Nimitz class was created to address the Navy’s inability to deal with ground-based targets due to the traditional prohibition against engaging targets on inhabited worlds with nuclear weapons.  The meson weapons mounted on this class can engage multiple targets and have a very good rate of fire, however, the ship must be within 60,000 kilometers of the planet for its weapons to be effective.

The Brooklyn class is intended to provide cheap, fast, platforms to link the scattered Imperial systems together.  One or two units of this class will be assigned to each Imperial system and fleet, giving them the ability to dispatch a unit through the jump gate network to inform the Capital of events at distant locations.  The classes high speed reduces travel time, bringing the colonies closer than when communications relied on larger naval warships or freighters.

The Type G gunboats are currently used by the Planetary Defense Command and the Imperial Guard.  Those two organizations are currently considering a redesign to replace the gunboat missile launchers with box launchers similar to those used in the Navy’s fighters.  Using the smaller box launchers would increase the gunboats launch capacity by 75%, to fourteen missiles, but that increase would come at a price.  Currently this class can recharge its missile launchers in two hundred minutes, or three and a third hours.  Usually, this means that by the time it has returned to its mother ship or to orbit of its base and it reloads its magazines, its launchers have recharged.  Changing over to the difficult to reload box launchers would mean increasing reload time to five hours, which is viewed by many as an unacceptable delay.

IPDC is prohibited by custom, tradition, and law from emplacing PDC’s on inhabited planets.  This is not an issue usually, as most planets have nearby moons suitable for positioning planetary defense centers, however, this is not always an option, as on Nova Terra in the Luyten system.  The planet has no moons, meaning that the IPDC’s defense planners had to find another solution.  The Guardian class is their answer.  This class will act as a “mobile” PDC, at least with the help of a tug, and will be placed into orbit around colony worlds.

Currently two units of this class have been built, both intended for Nova Terra, however, their deployment has been delayed while Naval maintenance facilities on Nova Terra are built up to supply the bases.

Wow, I can't wait to see the next time some of these ships are heading to battle, what are the chances that the empire will encounter a more powerfull foe in the future?

The odds are pretty good <G>.  Otherwise, what would be the fun?

This campaign is really developing now. It must be my geeky side but its fun to watch as a navy develops its fleet organization, class mix and technology over time.

Steve

The number of classes does tend to multiply when a navy becomes interstellar in scope.  I am still having a problem coming up with a multi-role fleet support vessel, though.  You can make a large civilian vessel that can carry large amounts of fuel and maintenance supplies, because Civ ships are easy to make big, but they can't carry missiles/magazines.  You can make a military ship that carries missiles and some supplies and fuel, but it's hard to get a good amount of all three into a reasonably sized ship.   Therefore I quite often end up with two different classes of support ship that carry greater or lesser amounts of all three.

Scouts are becoming increasinging important, at least for the ITN.  They have access to one very, very good scout from the old Empire, but that scout can only be in one place at one time, and is controlled by the guard anyway.

A question about ship design.  Do you need both the resolution 1 active sensor and the resolution 1 FC sensor for your AMMs to work correctly?

I wonder how much you role-play your game.  For example, you could use the couriers to transport personnel.  Alternatively, you could also only have fleets in distant solar systems react to alien incursions when a courier or chain of couriers arrives in these distant solar systems with news of the alien incursions.

How does cargo handling help your colony ships?  I thought cargo handling only helped cargo holds.  Am I incorrect?

Why do your survey ships only use EM and thermal sensors with a resolution of 1,000?  I can see the logic in only looking for planets.  However, if you are running silent with your active sensor turned off, you might stumble into a fighter of some form and potentially lose your survey ships despite their defenses.

Is this instead handled by deployment doctrine?  Are survey ships only deployed to solar systems that have been nominally cleared of hostile contacts by your main fleet?

Why do some of your missile based designs, like light cruisers, also mount a few non-MD lasers?  Is it a token nod to the fact that hostile contacts may be capable of closing to laser range despite the formidable missile broadsides supported by your fleet design principles?

First of, those kind of questions belong in the academy forum.

Yes

cargo handling helps in all load/unload tasks, including passengers. You can think about it that way: The colonists are put in cryostasis while still on the planet and only then put aboard the ship.

Passives don´t _have_ a resolution. The "Detect Sig strength 1000" is simply a measure of how sensitive the sensor is, i.e. a thermal sensor that detects a strength 1000 heatsurce at 120 million km, is twice as sensitive as one that has to get within 60 million km to see the source.

Hm, for some reason BBCode is off for me in here.

Point taken.  I got carried away reading through ship specs. and thinking of questions based on what I saw in the ship specs.  I will utilize the appropriate forum for the nature of many of these questions in the future.

I don't mind your posting them here.  Normally what Hawkeye said above would be true, but your questions were raised because of the ship designs I posted, and in part I posted them to stimulate just such questions, so feel free to post them here.  Also, I just like to know that people are reading what I post <G>.

Hawkeye already capably answered a couple of your rules questions, so I won't re-hash those.  As for the rest:

Missile to hit chances are vs targets moving at 3000 km/s, 5000 km/s and 10,000 km/s

This design is classed as a military vessel for maintenance purposes

The Nimitz class was created to address the Navy’s inability to deal with ground-based targets due to the traditional prohibition against engaging targets on inhabited worlds with nuclear weapons.  The meson weapons mounted on this class can engage multiple targets and have a very good rate of fire, however, the ship must be within 60,000 kilometers of the planet for its weapons to be effective.

You would be right about needed the AMM fire control for the ship's anti-missile defenses, except that it doesn't have any.  The missiles listed above as being carried by the ship were a carry over from the original design, the Essex CL that I copied to provide a starting point for the Nimitz class.  I never removed the missiles in spite of removing the magazines, so they show up on the ship listing in spite of the fact that the actual units don't carry any missiles.  My mistake, and its been corrected.  Thanks for catching it.

On this subject, the Nimitz class might do okay against a missile wave using its meson cannons, in spite of the fact that they aren't optimized for anti-missile work.  Twenty five cannons might be able to take out a few incoming missiles, though.

Well, I role play them quite a bit, which for me is the whole point of creating a universe and playing in it.  In all of my campaigns I assume no instantaneous communications between systems, whether they have jump gates or not.  If a message is going to be transmitted between systems, a courier or relay boat needs to carry it.

The survey ships are trying to be stealthy <G>.  Active sensors radiate, and can make ships visible far beyond the range at which they would be picked up otherwise.  The survey ships are also equipped with low-profile engines with reduced thermal emissions, which means that the ship is harder to detect thermally as well.

It is the Empire's policy, after certain early misadventures, to only send survey ships into systems that have already been thoroughly probed by fleet units.  This policy has reduced Survey Corps casualties to nothing since its inception.

The original design strategy envisioned the laser batteries acting as a backup if the magazines were exhausted, or if the enemy possesses defenses capable of stopping Imperial missile salvoes.  The desire to increase the missile broadsides of the larger ships has precluded the installation of beam weapons on the BB's and SD's, something that not all captains and admirals are comfortable with.  The CL's are still viewed as the fleet's last resort if an enemy manages to penetrate to beam range.

Please continue posting any and all questions, here or in the academy forum.  One of the nice things about the fiction is that it can help newer players with more complex strategies, economic issues, and ship design stuff.
