An idiot's guide to bringing Aurora up to date
« on: July 10, 2010, 07:05:48 PM »
The install process for Aurora is very convoluted. Here's a step by step guide to doing it.

If you use a period as a decimal indicator, change it to a comma.

1) Download and install this file. http://www.pentarch.org/steve/AuroraInstall491.zip
2) Unzip that file. Anywhere. Doesn't matter. You get four files. The two important ones are setup.exe, and AuroraUpdate491.zip.
3) Run setup.exe. As recommended below, on Windows 7 or Vista machines, do NOT install to the default path. Choose somewhere else, such as C:\Games\Aurora.  Remember the path.
4) Choose to keep the current version of any .dll files in any prompts that might appear during the install.
5) Unzip AuroraUpdate491.zip. You want all the files in there to end up where you just installed Aurora. You also want to choose to replace any duplicates.
6) Now download this file: http://www.pentarch.org/steve/Aurora510.zip
7) Unzip Aurora510.zip. Again, you want all the files in there to end up where you installed Aurora. You want to choose to replace any duplicates.
8) Download this file: http://www.pentarch.org/steve/Aurora514.zip
9) Unzip Aurora514.zip. Again, you want all the files in there to end up where you installed Aurora. Once again, you want to choose to replace any duplicates.
10) Now, finally, run Aurora. Ignore the error. Choose "Select" in the bottom right hand corner. Go to the Game menu on the menu bar that appears, and run the "v5.14 Data Update".

You're done. =]

On Vista/Win7 machines, I'd recommend installing outside of the default of c:\Program files\Aurora. Install to C:\Games\Aurora or the like.

Not always. I am on Win7 and I didn't need to load the dll special.

Do you have Office? The DLL comes with it.
