So, exactly what purpose does a comm.  shipport serve? I'm guessing it improves wealth generated through more trading and pish like that.

speeds up loading & unloading of cargoes (addative with Cargo Handling Systems on ships)

Reduces loading and unloading times. The formula is Load Time / (SpacePorts + 1)

So 1 spaceport will halve loading times, 2 spaceports will reduce them by 2/3rds, etc,
