NC Part 6: January 2042 - December 2042
« on: September 15, 2006, 03:52:46 PM »
3rd January 2042
The four Achilles class gravitational survey ships complete their survey of Athens, revealing the location of two new jump points. The jump point to Sol is on a bearing of 12 degrees at a range of one point six billion kilometers. The two new jump points are located on bearings of 1 degree at 2 billion kilometers and 211 degrees at 3 billion kilometers. As the Dionysus is already in Athens awaiting the completion of the survey and one of the newly identified jump points is relatively close to its existing position, the jump tender and its escorts move to investigate.

4th January 2042
The Terran Union launches two new Dunkerque class gravitational survey ships, taking their total to four. The Union Dunkerques have better sensors than the Commonwealth Achilles class and now they also match our number of survey ships.

9th January 2042
Dionysus enters the recently discovered jump point in Athens and finds herself in a binary system with a pair of orange K class stars, the primary being K5-V and the companion orbiting at 100 AU a K8-V. The companion has only one small and unremarkable chunk of rock in close orbit. The primary has four rocky planets, three gas giants and two asteroid belts. The only planet of note is the innermost, close enough to the dim star to have a survivable temperature of minus twenty degrees and a thin, unbreathable oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere. Eighty percent of the surface is covered in water, albeit with large ice caps. The gravity is only sixty percent of Earth

Steve

Again, the year seems to end early, though this time in late October.

That might be a character limit in either PHP or MySQL (which runs the backend).

In addition to refits of existing ships, Commonwealth ship designers have been looking at the possibility of a vessel designed to protect other ships from missile attack, allowing those ships to concentrate on long range combat without a diversion of resources to heavy missile defences. This will be particularly relevant to ships such as the Dracon class jump cruisers which lack any lasers at all. The Poseidon class escort cruiser is equipped with ten short ranged but fast firing 10cm lasers coupled with a pair of Mk2 Laser Fire Control systems. No long range fire control is needed as the maximum range of her lasers is only 120,000 km. She is almost defenceless against ships armed with larger calibre lasers, unless she can get very close, but she should be able to wreak havoc on incoming missile salvos. The first Poseidon is laid down and should be ready by November 2044.

30th October 2042
A third Dionysus class jump tender is laid down. While not as capable as a Dracon class jump cruiser, the Dionysus class ships are ideal for supporting our survey efforts. At the moment survey ships are standing idle at jump points as they wait for the assignment of one of our overworked jump-capable ships. A second Dracon is due in February 2044 but the third Dionysus will be available seven months earlier in July 2043.

3rd November 2042
The Hercules Fast Scout Cherokee arrives at the Gitanyow homeworld with Diplomatic Team Alpha on board. The mission of this team is to resolve recent differences with the Gitanyow and get the technology exchange program back on track.

13th November 2042
Dracon arrives at the Delphi jump point to relieve Bacchus, who sets course for the Pharsalos jump point to await the survey ships that recently left Thermopylae.

14th November 2042
The Apollo class missile cruiser Agamemnon completes her overhaul. With both missile cruisers now available, the Akagi enters the shipyards. Her planned electronics refit will have to wait at least five months until after the overhaul is complete.

18th November 2042
The Japanese-built freighter Hosho is sent to the shipyards to be refitted to a Themistocles class. The refit includes doubling her engineering capacity and adding a third ion engine, a tractor beam and passive sensors. Her hull is also increased in size by fifteen percent to accommodate the additional systems. Hosho has been involved in the ongoing operations to move our automated mines to the new mining colony on Toronto but her top speed of 1621 km/s is much slower than the 2117 km/s of the Themistocles and her lack of a tractor beam results in loading or unloading requiring ten days compared to two days for the Themistocles. The refit will be complete by March 2043.

21st November 2042
On the Gitanyow homeworld, relations have improved to the point where more discussions can begin on technology exchanges. An offer of partial jump drive technology is made in return for the Gitanyow
