New Cold War / Cold War: Month 213, The Lothari and Aurarii move
« Last post by Kurt on September 21, 2022, 02:22:26 PM »
Month 213, Day 1, Lothari Khalan System (Frontier)
On this day the Lothari 1st Survey Group probed the single new warp point they had discovered in the Khalan system on the Kingdom’s frontier.  The probe ship, a Timbedra class heavy cruiser, jumped out of the system and then returned ninety seconds later.  The ship’s captain reported that the new system was a binary system with three habitable planets, two type T planets and a type ST.  The survey commander then dispatched the cruiser and a corvette to probe the system, with a second corvette to keep watch on the far side of the warp point.  Three days later the watch ship received report from the heavy cruiser.  There were populations on all three planets, and their transmissions matched Alliance standard languages and frequencies.  The Lothari survey group had found another route into the Alliance.  The heavy cruiser’s CO turned his ship around and headed back out-system, never having entered the colony’s detection range.  The Kingdom hasn’t established an ICN as of yet, so the information will have to be sent back by CD, which is immediately sent on its way.

Unknown to the Alliance the Kingdom of Lothar had discovered the Alliance’s Thoen system.  The Thoen system was adjacent to the Dether system, on the Far Frontier Sector’s secondary route to the core systems.

Month 213, Day 1, Aurarii Prime
The Aurarii Assault Fleet left orbit in good order.  There were celebrations across the capital city as the citizens reveled in the day off the Emperor had granted them to honor the fleet as it departed.  The departing ships each transmitted a special theme song created by the Emperor’s personal musical artist, intended to inspire the people with the glory that would be gained by the fleet.

Once it had left orbit, the Assault Fleet was joined by both of the Republic’s survey groups as it headed out-system.

Month 213, Day 5, Lothari controlled Liawak system
Lothari ground forces land on the two colonies in the Liawak system.  Meeting little resistance, the troops establish effective control in a matter of days.  Lothari naval intelligence troops spread out across the major cities of both colonies, attempting to discover any astrogation data that might have been missed by the Alliance government prior to the landing of the troops.  The Kingdom has no information about the warp points in this system, and while a survey group has jumped into the system and begun looking, it will take the group forty days to complete a rough survey of the system, and another forty days to complete a detailed survey.  Finding astrogation information on one of the colonies would considerably shorten this timeline.

Month 213, Day 6, Alliance Chruqua system
The Torqual fleet slid into its assigned staging area close to the Doraz fleet, which had arrived several hours earlier.  The Torqual fleet consisted of twenty warships, including three battlecruisers, while the Doraz fleet consisted of fifteen warships, also including three battlecruisers.  It was a considerable force, however, neither state had yet fielded fighters, and both states were significantly behind the Alliance’s standard technology, so for now the Alliance Navy preferred to keep the forces in reserve.  If necessary, they would be deployed forward, however, the Alliance was unlikely to risk them in a deep-space fleet action without considerable carrier support.

Month 213, Day 7, Lothar Prime
The CD from the 1st Survey Group bearing word of their discovery arrived at the Lothari home world on this date.  Reacting quickly, the Supreme Leader ordered the navy to assemble a second assault force and dispatch it to seize the newly discovered Alliance system.  The Navy protested, as many ships were still on shakedown after being reactivated from the reserves, but the Supreme Leader insisted, calling the admirals shortsighted.

Several hours later a force of eighteen warships left orbit, bound for the newly discovered Alliance system.  The departure of this group leaves the Home Fleet critically weakened, at least until the eighteen ships in the yards being reactivated from the reserves are ready for service.

Month 213, Day 10, Alliance Nagasaki system
Sho-sa F’Nor’s group rejoins the ships he had left behind in the Nagasaki system, at the warp point to the Telmasa system, which was in between the Nagasaki system and the Lothar-controlled Liawak system.  Based on the reports from the battle in Liawak he didn’t have enough ships to challenge the Lothari, yet, so his orders were to remain at the warp point in defensive positions until reinforcements arrived.  This was galling, as the Telmasa system contained two colonies as well, but he understood the necessity.  Reinforcements were en route, he just had to wait for them to arrive.

With all of the Projekt 038 light cruisers finally refitted and them taking over the picket duties, Poland begins to scrap their old frigates and destroyers. Some of them have been in service for one hundred and seventy years and haven’t been upgraded in a long time, being equipped with railguns incapable of reaching the full range of available fire controls and ion drives giving them speed of only three thousand and three hundred kilometers per second, less than half of what the fleet is capable of now.
The government is considering building even larger patrol vessels, however the gallicite situation is still fragile with mining barely supplying the demand.

Poland colonizes new planet, Bledow in the Diament system. The world is somewhat larger than Mars but is completely barren with neither water nor atmosphere. It does however have over four million tonnes of gallicite in almost maximum accessibility although it has nothing else of note with all other mineral deposits being almost impossible to access.
Gallicite continues to be the biggest problem for Poland. While all ordnance facilities and almost all shipyards are operating at full capacity, they cannot expand. For that matter the Republic ceased construction of their one million tonne tugs as each requires fifty thousand tonne of the mineral, and the mining output simply isn’t there. Moreover Marzanna, which is at the end of the logistical network, experiences intermittent shortages.
While it is true that it is easier and cheaper to build infrastructure for Bledow than orbital habitats for Belchatow which is the primary gallicite producer, that isn’t the primary reason for why the new colony was established. The problem is that at current mining rates Belchatow will be out of gallicite within two hundred and thirty years. And while it may seem insane to worry about something that far into the future, the war with the Unity have been ongoing for one hundred and sixty six years with humans being constantly on the defensive. It is entirely possible that Balchatow will be out of gallicite by the time the war is over, which is why new mining locations are needed, even if those are suboptimal due to lack of other minerals.
Cometary mining also isn’t an answer. There are currently eighty eight mining ships in service, split into thirty groups with output equal to nearly three thousand mining complexes, but good sites are becoming fewer and fewer, their deposits are rather small and the Republic isn’t expanding its borders so new ones aren’t being found. In fact no new mining ships are being constructed.
There are other planets considered subotimal that may be colonized for more gallicite. HRCC 5277 III has thirty seven million tonnes of the mineral in moderate accessibility and all other TN elements are also present, but most of them are almost impossible to get while the ones that can be extracted easily are in plentiful supply. There are also numerous bodies with easily accessible gallicite but quantities of around two hundred thousand tonnes that could become small, tertiary mining sites with a couple of hundred mines that would provide small income individually but taken together could solve the issue while also providing other resources.
The bottom line is that for now Poland cannot enlarge its military industrial complex. Instead for the foreseeable future it will have to focus on expanding its mining sector.

The population of Marzanna exceeds five billion. For comparison the second most populous known planet is Amazonia, inhabited by thirty four hundred million people.
The Polish homeworld have changed significantly during the war. Not only is the population nearly ten times greater than before the First Invasion, the shoddy, cheap and hastily constructed domes are being replaced with massive arcologies. Those house not only people and industry, but also gardens and even forests. The life is so comfortable in fact that a lot less people are hoping to emigrate, although open spaces and job opportunities ensure a steady supply of migrants.
The planet also no longer have manpower shortages. In fact, considering how well protected the world is, courtesy of Baszta, some want to move naval shipbuilding back to Marzanna, despite it being on the front. However the government is unwilling to consider it, as all mining operations are in Pogranicze and beyond.

The Polish gallicite situation have stabilized and a healthy stockpile have been established, allowing the nation to once again focus on its military. The most obvious course of action would be to enlarge the primary yards which would allow the Republic to build their first battleships, possibly even catching up to the massive ships the aliens have been fielding but it’s not that simple.
There are currently three naval bases in Poland, located on Kleczanow, Baszta and Niedzica. The latter two however are housed in orbital habitats with strictly limited manpower and as a result they rely on orbital installations with only a third of their maintenance capacity coming from manned installations. Unfortunately there is only a single yard building those kinds of space stations and while it is currently expanding to a million tonnes of capacity to speed up the process, for now the Projekt 046 class battlecruisers are the largest warships the Republic can support.
The secondary yards are building light cruisers for patrol and picket duties and the Polish government believes that those should be expanded for now. Unlike Korea and Brazil, the Republic is actually trying to provide real protection for other colonies rather than absolute minimum but it is also true that the smallest 'proper' kinhalan warship observed so far was thirty five thousand tonnes, over twice as large as the Projekt 038 and most warships were even larger. The light cruisers, in large numbers, would be quite capable but they are too spread out to have those numbers.
Moreover the navy doesn’t see those ships as just pickets. In case of a disaster in the Parana or Wrota area those ships are supposed to all congregate in Pogranicze or Solidarnosc and establish a last ditch jump point defense which means they must have at least some basic capability and reasonable numbers. And considering what the kinhalans have, the light cruisers are once again simply too small.
Last but not least if Korea tries something again the government and the military would really prefer to deal with them without using their primary battle fleet.
All of which explains why instead of building battleships, Poland decided to enlarge their secondary yards to build the new Projekt 051 class heavy cruisers. Those will mass forty eight thousand tonnes and are rather simple designs equipped with sixteen railguns and eight turreted gauss cannons.
The shipyard expansion is still ongoing after which will come retooling, so it will be ten to fifteen years before first ships enter service. In the meantime the Republican space is being patrolled by twenty eight light cruisers with eight more under construction.

Baszta ceases production of additional bases. While gallicte situation is stable, it is also fragile and while there are five industrialized worlds in the Republic, only two of them – Marzanna and Kleczanow – support establishment of new colonies as the other ones are engrossed in their own tasks. As such the small moon will now produce automated mines to be moved to new colonies.
While many are worried about the next invasion, others are confident, almost arrogant, due to just how heavily fortified the system is. Baszta can fire a salvo of over thirty five thousand Osas, which adds up to nearly a hundred and eighty thousand submunitions. Many believe the aliens simply cannot build a fleet capable of withstanding that. And even if they can the moon has over three hundred and twenty thousand anti-missiles in the magazines of its bases, plus an additional hundred thousand in planetary storage. And of course if all else fails there are over four thousand gauss cannons ready to protect the capital. And that does not include what Korea or the combined human fleets can do.

When Poland first encountered the Guardians it was calculated that sixty light cruisers would be needed to clear the system. The Republic had that power for decades now, especially since technology have improved, but they lacked two things – jump ships and political will.
The first problem have now been solved with the launch of ORP Starodub, the first Polish jump battlecruiser. She is the same size as Projekt 046 and can escort up to six other ships through a jump point in squadron transit, drastically reducing the time electronics need to come back on.
However there is still no political will to expand. The primary problem is the threat of the Unity which makes the government want to have full readiness to respond to the next invasion. Secondary forces used for picket duty cannot be used as they are far weaker and they do not use anti-missiles which are supposed to be the weapon used against the Guardians which means guaranteed heavy losses. In short the ship will, for now, be completely useless.
However if Poland survives the next attack it is very likely that they will try and clear at least some Guardian hold outs, as Poland needs more territory, or more specifically, more resources. They are doing what they can but most mining locations are uninhabitable, requiring orbital habitats and automated mines, a very expensive propositions so much so that the Republic have still not truly solved their gallicite problems.

Poland becomes the most populous of the three Parana powers with a total of thirteen billion people living in the Republic. Similar number of people live in the Federation, but the total population of DPRK is only nine billion and three hundred million.
At the start of the war, they were the smallest one with population of nearly five hundred and fifty million. Korea was the largest nation with population of eight hundred and sixty seven million and Brazil was in between, inhabited by seven hundred and twenty seven million people.
The seeds of change were sown around the Second Invasion. While Poland was expanding to gain desperately needed resources Brazil was mostly isolationist, staying on their already colonized worlds while Korea was only beginning establishment of new colonies when their economy was hammered by the kinhalans. This delayed them so much that the Republic have overtaken them in population sixty years ago. More importantly perhaps their TN related budget have been around sixty to seventy percent of the Polish one in recent decades, making them a definite second rate power. Moreover since they keep their shipyards and their fleet in their own space its unknown how large their military actually is, but if it was larger than the Republican or Federal one they likely would have shown that.
Brazil on the other hand have expanded explosively into other systems. After their increased military spending and incredible cruiser build up after the invasion, they found themselves hungry for resources. It begun with duranium shortages, then they were lacking fuel, then gallicite and now they have problem with tritanium. It should be noted however that while the shortages have stopped them from growing, they did not stop them from fully utilizing their industry. More over they are close to solving their latest issue and once they do they may once again experience an enormous growth.
Militarily they have the largest fleet. Their main shipyards are located around their homeworld, but their entire mobile force has been sent to the Escudo system, which means their warships had to move through the Polish sensor range. Fifty four battlecruisers and thirty six cruisers have been detected. The static defenses are more problematic, as no Polish vessel have ever visited the secondary component of Parana or Escudo since they were asked to leave, but those are expected to be heavy as well.
It should be noted that the Republic should overtake the Federation in the near term. While Brazil is building six battlecruisers at a time, each massing over sixty thousand tonnes, Poland is building eight at a time, each massing over a hundred thousand tonnes. On the other hand the Federation has a total of twenty four yards, eighteen of which produce immobile bases for planetary and jump point defense, but those can be retooled, allowing Brazil to quadruple their ship production in a very short amount of time.
Moreover Poland is not without its own problems. Mineral stockpiles are falling almost across the board forcing total focus on construction of mines and orbital habitats while keeping the military industry static. Even Niedzica, the primary Polish naval base, is building mines instead of desperately needed fortifications as the planet has reasonable mineral deposits. Similarly Wieliczka is a very important R&D site but whenever a new Bishops Ring is constructed, every scrap of available manpower is used for extraction operations. It is unknown when the situations will stabilize, but it may be necessary to slow dawn or even suspend shipbuilding soon.

Poland have received a message from Brazil – the Kinhalan Unity have breached the Escudo defenses the day before. The Republic demanded the actual tactical recordings rather than just a summary and they got them.
The picket was headed by the expected fifty four battlecruisers and thirty six cruisers but was also supported by fifteen destroyers and thirty six forts massing around fifteen thousand tonnes each, or equivalent to a light cruiser. In total the Federation have assembled well over five million tonnes of death.
The kinhalan assault was unusual, for the incoming warships were not performing a squadron jump. Rather they arrived in a solid mass right on top of the jump point, implying it has been stabilized on the other side. That was good. What was not good was the size of the invading fleet – a total of sixteen superdreadnoughts, each massing nearly six hundred thousand tonnes or nine and a half times as much as a Brazilian battlecruiser. In total the aliens have thrown nine and a half million tonnes of warships into this attack.
The Federal ships unleashed truly apocalyptic amounts of damage. Within thirty seconds they have launched nearly forty two and a half thousand missiles while also striking with their lasers and gauss cannons. Unfortunately this was enough to destroy only six of the superdreadnoughts.
The humans continued to pummel the invaders using their beam weapons and munitions fired from repeatable anti-missile launchers, some of which were dedicated shipkillers while other were interceptors, indicating ammunition shortage. They destroyed the seventh superdreadnough, then another. For nearly three minutes Brazil was able to fire at the behemoths as if those were practice targets, destroying thirteen of them. But then the alien electronics finally rebooted allowing them to fire back, destroying one of the battlecruisers in the first salvo. They seemed to be equipped exclusively with energy weapons, which was a small blessing, but those were still devastating.
The two sides continued their point blank slugging match, neither willing to retreat. However the aliens have lost too much to the transit disruption and the humans still had their small shipkillers they continued to launch throughout the battle.
Four minutes after the enemy entry it was all over. The sixteen superdreadnoughts were slowly expanding wrecks although they were accompanied by two Federal battlecruisers and four destroyers.
The Republican officers reviewing the recording were confused as it seemed like the line held. However the Federal warships were not retreating to rearm. The Poles realized the enemy had no jump ships and no way to inform the Unity of victory or defeat which meant another force will be coming through to scout. This was confirmed by the fact that the recording was much longer, so the officers fast forwarded it.
They were wrong. An hour after the initial battle more aliens came through, but it was not a scout force. Instead forty three warships have jumped in. Nine have used the stabilized jump point, but the rest have arrived as squadrons. The force comprised five additional superdreadnoughts, twenty seven dreadnoughts each massing nearly three hundred and fifty thousand tonnes and eleven battleships massing one hundred and seventy thousand tonnes. Overall the aliens have thrown another fourteen million tonnes of warships.
The Brazilian force stayed at the jump point and focused on the ships they could get with point blank fire. Unfortunately before they could fire, the aliens begun opening the range. By the same token, those ships were far more fragile than the superdreadnoughts of the first wave and the first two were destroyed within fifteen seconds.
The alien squadrons responded with thousands of missiles that destroyed a battlecruiser and a destroyer, but several more heavy warships have been damaged and unable to keep up. The alien launchers had long reload times and most warships were out of energy weapon range, allowing the Federal fleet o keep pummeling the dreadnoughts that arrived through standard transit. Fortunately they still had missiles for their repeatable launchers, which significantly improved human firepower.
Thousands more of the alien missiles arrived, going mainly after already damaged warships. Either their launchers have much higher fire rate then previously thought or there was a problem with coordination.
The Brazilian forces finally destroyed the last of the nine dreadnoughts that arrived right on top of the human ships. The enemy forces have been moving around and away from humans and congregating towards two assembly points. One point was for warships capable of four and a half thousand kilometers per second, faster than Federal ships, and the second point was for ships capable of three thousand and six hundred kilometers per second.
The human force have split into three groups. The first one were the immobile forts and damaged ships that could move but were slowed were assembling there. The second group were the older destroyers and cruisers that were capable of only three thousand and two hundred kilometers per second and as such were unable to catch the enemy. This group was almost untouched and comprised thirty six cruisers and ten destroyers. The third group comprised the battlecruisers capable of moving at four thousand kilometers per second, faster than one of the groups, but slower than the other. It comprised a total of thirty six warships.
The disabled battlecruisers were ordered to be abandoned and scuttled, a move that indicated the Brazilian commander did not expect to hold the system. Only four damaged warships were still en route to the forts, while the rest of the force begun chasing the slower enemies. The aliens were likely trying to stay out of range of the energy weapons and demolish the defenders with missiles, but the reload time should be long enough to allow Brazil to heavily damage or even destroy the slower ships. The even slower cruiser group was also following and was probably going to be used to deal with any enemies that fell out of formation so that the heavier battlecruisers could focus on those that could still run.
The slower enemy group comprised eleven battleships and a dreadnought. Before Brazil could get into range, they launched a barrage of missiles. Their targets managed to reload and fire their own, but while the Federation was not using anti-missiles, their gauss cannons managed to intercept eight hundred incomings, leaving only four hundred to strike one of the battlecruisers, that got heavily damaged and begun retreating towards the forts. By that time five enemy battleships have been destroyed.
By the time Brazil run out of ammunition, the slower alien group comprised one dreadnought and two battleships, although one more battleship was limping along one hundred kps slower than her sisters.
Before the battlecruisers could get in range of their lasers, the faster alien group fired eleven thousand missiles, which resulted in the loss of thirteen Federal warships. Still twenty two remained, plus the slower group, so they continued their pursuit.
They first got into range of the lagging battleship and quickly dispatched her. Unfortunately one Federal warship fell out of formation, slowed and the larger alien group was between them and the forts. She was ordered to try and make it towards the inhabited planet in the system.
They finally got into range of the slower alien group, now comprising one dreadnought, probably a jump vessel and two battleships, one of which was likely a jump vessel. The slogging match was slow but they destroyed one of the smaller ships while losing one of their battlecruisers. Unfortunately while they were working on the second vessel another salvo of eleven thousand missiles arrived, annihilating the entire group.
The slower force turned around to head towards the forts. It was obvious the battle was lost but the remaining forces intended to make the aliens use their ammunition, at least to some extent. It is known kinhalans can launch five volleys and they’ve already launched three.
They never made it. The invaders have launched another wave of missiles which destroyed most of the force leaving only twelve cruisers operational. The fort group comprised thirty six forts and four damaged battlecruisers, but the static constructs were pure offensive platforms with no gauss cannons or anti-missile launchers. They could soak the alien ordnance with their bulk, but that was it.
The remaining crews were ordered to abandon their ships and bases and scuttle them.

Once the review of the tactical recording was over, Poland got brought up to speed about what was happening in Escudo while also being given access to the newest information coming through, although due to the distances that information was twenty hours old.
The aliens appeared to be focusing on search and rescue operation, which is very likely to be the largest one in history due to survivors of over a hundred ships waiting for help. According to preliminary data over forty five thousand Brazilians died and twice as many are awaiting pickup.
Nonetheless assuming no more kinhalan warships arrive, they still have ten million tonnes of military hardware about to proceed further into human space. As Poland has their own anti-missile sized shipkillers, the navy is confident they could defend a jump point. However the main Republican battle fleet comprises a total of four million and three hundred thousand tonnes of warships, less than half of what the enemy has, making it impossible for Poland to win in a deep space battle. As Brazil no longer has any mobile force, the only potential reinforcement is Korea which refuses to engage beyond Wrota.
For now orders are given for the fleet to depart towards Brazilian space. As they are faster, they will be able to avoid the alien force if necessary and they are ordered to push as far as possible to establish a jump point defense. One of the stealth scouts will be used to check whether or not jump points are safe and while this is for all instances and purposes a suicide mission, it is one that has to be performed.
Brazil is doing what they can to slow down the enemy progress. Among other things they ordered all their ships to head to nearest port in order to stop all traffic and prevent the aliens from finding their way deeper into human space by observing it. Whether or not scared civilians will listen is anyone's guess.

The aliens have completed their rescue operations and their fleet is moving towards Fortaleza de Gelo. The planet is the main naval base in the system and has population of over one billion and four hundred million.

The alien fleet have entered orbit of Fortaleza de Gelo but they haven’t been doing anything as of yet.
Brazil does not posses ground forces. Their rationale is that once orbitals are lost, the planet is lost as well and ground forces would only delay the inevitable at the cost of thousands if not millions of lives, especially if the invader chose bombardment rather than invasion. Nonetheless the Federal special forces and police have evacuated the shipyards and begun mining them. If the aliens do invade, they won’t get their hands on human shipbuilding.
Unfortunately they cannot do that with the ground industry. There are simply too many facilities which means that if the world is occupied, it will all fall into enemy hands and Fortaleza de Gelo has massive industry. It has the same manufacturing capability as Marzanna, has four hundred ordnance factories, maintenance facilities for the now destroyed picket, numerous spaceports and twenty two hundred mines, a thousand of them automated. The world is also a large supplied or boronide, mercassium, uridium, corundium and gallicite. If lost it will be a huge blow to the Federation although it may not be a crippling one.
There is another planet in the system, Nevoa, orbiting the distant C component of the system. It has population of three hundred million and has four hundred mining complexes. It is a supporting mining site, providing durnium for Fortaleza.
One piece of good news is that civilian ships obeyed their orders to either scatter or abandon their ships in order to not reveal the location of the jump point deeper into human space. With this the Polish force may actually be able to get into position to stop the kinhalans from advancing further.

The tracking stations on Fortaleza have been monitoring two unknown Unity ships moving towards the planet. As soon as those entered orbit, they begun launching drop pods, starting the planetary invasion. The local government have given orders to blow up the shipyards.
There were twelve yards in orbit, all with capacity of sixty to seventy thousand tonnes. Half were building new battlecruiser sized jump point picket bases while the other half were building first orbital fortifications for Fortaleza.

The aliens have landed all over the planet and while some civilians tried to resist, they were slaughtered without accomplishing much. Within a day the entire world went dark and while it is likely the enemy didn’t actually managed to occupy everything, they did managed to take over all government and military facilities as well as planetary communications. Fortaleza have, for all instances and purposes, fallen.
This is another problem for humans. The invading force is estimated at ten divisions and even if the system was retaken, the Parana nations simply cannot launch an invasion against a force like this. This also means Brazil can no longer track the alien movements.

A Polish stealth scout arrived at the jump point to Escudo. There is no sign of aliens. The battle fleet is five days away.

Three hours after the Polish force arrived at the Escudo jump point, a single alien vessel entered the system. She massed ten thousand tonnes, almost certainly a scout or an exploration ship, and was quickly blown apart by railgun fire.
The Republican force has enough interceptor sized anti-ship missiles for ten salvos as the rest of the magazine space is taken by anti-missiles. Coupled with their technological advantage and heavy railgun armament it is very unlikely the known kinhalan force can breach the system. In fact it would be very much to humanities benefit if they tried, as it could open the possibility of retaking Escudo. However if the invaders have a third wave they haven’t shown yet, the Polish fleet will likely die here and with that humanity may fall.

The data feed from Nevoa has been cut. The colony was orbited by a single alien dreadnought, so the enemy knows of it, but hasn’t been invaded yet, most likely due to all forces being needed on Fortaleza. Due to position of the planet, not much could be seen from there, but the fact it still stood was important in and of itself.
If the feed was cut it means something is on the other side of the jump point, blocking the signal– almost certainly the enemy fleet.

It’s been three weeks since the Polish force begun to picket the jump point to Escudo and it appears the front have stabilized. Whether or not the aliens know this, they cannot break through but humanity cannot counterattack.
The situation is serious however as the fleet cannot stay indefinitely. Sooner or later it will have to retreat or to split in two and start rotating. And as Polish own Intelligence services and JTIMR point out the enemy does have the strength to deal with half of the Republican force. If they attack again in five years or so they will breach the lines and move all the way to Wrota at a minimum unless Korea joins the blockade, which they refuse to do.
That isn’t the only problem. Escudo had three jump points. One leads to the enemy space, one leads back to human space while the other starts a loop that leads to HRCC 7609 where the current defense is being established. The good news is that it goes through the system of KRC 47723 where Brazil believes the Guardians are located, but they never confirmed this.
The logical move would be to move one system further in, but it’s not that simple. The loop contains the planets of Santarem and Carajas. While they aren’t heavily inhabited, with population of one hundred and twenty million and one hundred and sixty million respectively, those are incredibly important mining locations. Brazil have disclosed their resource deposits to make Poland aware of the stakes and Carajas has twenty eight million tonnes of gallicte at high accessibility while Santarem has twenty four million tonnes of tritanium that is similarly cheap to extract. Those two locations are absolutely necessary for fueling the Federal military, especially now that the massive mining operation on Fortaleza de Gelo have been lost.
To make matters worse it is unknown how well Brazilian intelligence countermeasure will work. The Federation, like the Republic, is a fairly open society and even if it wasn’t, a general information needed by a lot of people, such as general configuration of jump points, is not something that can be easily hidden. Because of that in an event of an invasion the local governments have the ability to deploy an indiscriminate virus that deletes any and all data it can while also manufacturing new, random data to drawn the enemy investigators in noise. The population is also instructed to lie as much as possible so that the invaders don’t know which piece of information is true. However this is the very first time this will be tested. As a result the enemy may know about the loop and may try to use it as quickly as possible, may know about the loop but hesitate due to Guardians or may not know about it and not explore in that direction at all. There is simply no way to know.
Nonetheless the distances are significant enough and Polish ships are fast enough that they should be able to retreat if the enemy enters from that side. In the long term however this means two systems, rather than one, will need to be picketed.
In the end Poland and Brazil agree to try and make it work if they can secure HRCC 7609 in the near term.
In theory the Republic could move their space stations from Niedzica and Baszta and then set transports from Kleczanow to establish a permanent picket right away, without waiting to build any colonies in the system. However that would only take care of the ships but it would not take care of the crews. The government was aware of this and was also aware that in the future it will have to establish its own jump point defenses so they designed a new space station that would be able to take care of the crews while supporting ships up to forty thousand tonnes. And even if there was no need for such defenses they could still be used by naval bases to expand their maintenance capabilities finally allowing the Republic to expand their shipyards to build ships larger than the current battlecruisers.
Unfortunately the shipyard is still retooling and needs two more years after which the first space station will likely need ten more years or so of construction. There isn’t enough time for that. Fortunately Brazil has a solution. When they were building up their fortifications in Escudo they were hoping to build much larger ships and bases so they were building space stations beyond what they ended up needing when the resource shortages hit. One of them has crew support module and the four of them together can support warships up to thirty six thousand tonnes. If Baszta was stripped of its stations it would have been enough to maintain the Polish fleet. It would also shorten logistical network, as Niedzica could be used as a source of spare parts and other resources rather than Kleczanow.
The freight capacity will be an issue however. Due to the size of the Polish force and distance twenty seven freighters would be needed. The Republic can afford it, but it will impact their operations.
Ultimately Poland is willing to do this, but they do have conditions. The first one, considered to be in everyone’s interest, is that Brazil won’t flake on them this time like they did with Escudo. In fact the Republican representatives allow themselves a very rare barb at the other nation, pointing out that if the two of them were defending together, seventeen hundred million people wouldn’t be now under kinhalan occupation. They do that not simply out of pettiness but also to drive home the point that Polish basing rights in HRCC 7609 are in everyone’s interest and not a case of Republic trying to get something out of the tragedy.
That doesn’t however mean that Poland is willing to do all of this for free, even if they might have done so out of self interest. They have asked for rights to establish four mining colonies in Brazilian space. However they don’t have anything in mind right now. Rather whenever the Republic needs to begin new operations due to shortages, they will consider planets in the Federal space and if there will be one that is adequate, it will be granted with no limits on transit rights to and from them. Those mining colonies will not be established on planets that have been already claimed or developed by Brazil but by the same token they don’t have to be put in the systems the Federation currently controls. If they expand in the future, the new planets will also be part of the deal.
With that the two nations begin to draw plans at building up their new defenses. The system of HRCC 7609 is renamed Resiliencia.

The JTIMR have completed their analysis of the Fourth Invasion.
The first part of the document deals with a small detail that may end up having enormous consequences – why didn’t the aliens use squadron transit during the first wave? They were shown to have superdreadnought sized jump vessels, so why weren’t those used? Three options are presented. The first one is incompetence, however this is mostly dismissed, due to danger of assigning this to the enemy. The second option is that it would have taken too long to construct such vessels, possibly as much as thirty or forty more years. However that would only be reasonable if the aliens knew what was waiting for them or they had some sort of internal political pressure. In the end this option is also considered unlikely.
The third and last option is far more interesting – they couldn’t wait to build additional jump ships, because their economy couldn’t afford the wait. If the enemy couldn’t keep up their shipbuilding than it would make sense for them to strike while at their peak rather than having their fleet size static for decades while they built mere two additional vessels. The reason why majority of the officers are in favor of this explanation is that the operation was otherwise very well thought out, because human nations are constantly struggling with supplying their military with resources and because, using available figures as baseline, it should cost in the vicinity of two hundred and twenty thousand tonnes of TN minerals to simply maintain the fleet the enemy had, and that was the minimal figure.
That last part was stunning for the various political leaders, but they quickly realized that it was a very likely scenario. While Poland wasn’t willing to disclose those figures, the maintenance of their fleet deployed at Resiliencia costs them sixty thousand tonnes of TN elements each year and it is one fifth the size of what the aliens have thrown at Escudo. Assuming kinhalans also have some sort of patrol vessels, like the Republic does, this would drive the costs even further and that doesn’t take into account the ammunition. The idea that the Unity had shortages that made them believe they have to use their fleet or fall behind seemed like the most logical explanation for what happened.
The second part was reiteration that Brazil made an enormous mistake taking the sole responsibility for the safety of the Escudo system, although this time it came from Federal officers assigned to JTIMR while the Polish and Korean officers stayed silent on the matter.
The next part of the document regarded the battle itself. The officers were extremely impressed with how well the interceptor sized shipkillers have performed. The initial strike of forty two thousand missiles dealt huge damage, but it paled in comparison to what the following waves have achieved both against the first and second waves. While those would be far less effective against fully engaged point defense of a concentrated alien fleet, in jump point battle those were devastating, giving enormous advantage to human forces. Fortunately Poland also had such munitions deployed on their warships.
The JTIMR warned however of what the battle meant for static defenses in the Parana system. Many of those forty two thousand missiles that initially hit were large and had powerful eight mega tonne warheads. In short they did as much damage as nearly a hundred thousand Osa submunitions and those were enough to destroy only six superdreadnoughts. Admittedly those had very heavy armor, much more so than vessels designed for deep space combat, but assuming all Polish missiles fired from Baszta could hit, they would have likely destroyed up to ten million tonnes of alien warships, and the enemy had twenty four million tonnes. And if the alien point defense was taken into account, the static defenses were unlikely to deal any real damage.
Hearing that one hundred and eighty thousand individual submunitions would be at most an inconvenience for an invading fleet gave the politicians a second shock, but JTIMR went ahead and calmed their fears a little. First while it is true that Poland could fire only this many in a single salvo, the Republic is currently replacing their long range missiles with new version although only three thousand were in storage. Twelve thousand more – sixty thousand submunitions – of older model was also ready. Last but not least there was also Korea. While DPRK could fire only about forty thousand missiles in a single wave, those had heavier warheads and they hopefully could strike multiple times, although this was not confirmed as Korea refused to disclose those kind of numbers. Nonetheless JTIMR warned the listeners that ammunition production for local fortifications should be improved so that even if larger individual salvos were not possible, they could fire more of them. The officers also pointed out that Brazil having ability to strike from the primary system would really help.
Beyond that some building practices turned out to be somewhat problematic. The largest was fuel. Several battlecruisers had most of their engines intact but were disabled due to tank rapture, forcing them to be abandoned and scuttled instead of sent back to the forts so they could try and survive additional missile waves. More over any exploding engine was doing significant damage and it would probably be a good idea to move towards smaller ones, even if this will impact fuel efficiency.
Last but not least the report recommended that the human nations should begin actually investing into their ground forces as well as their capability to transport and deploy them in order to retake conquered planets.
That deal with tactical analysis, after which the report moved to the strategic layer and their conclusion was very simple – the aliens were winning.
It is becoming obvious that the enemy have chosen to plan for a long war, rather than a quick victory, which is why their attacks are spaced out so much. The one time they tried to attack as soon as possible, during the Third Invasion, they were driven away without ever getting close to the inner system. As such they have chosen to focus on destroying as much industry as possible as a way to slowly gain an advantage and it’s working. Korea was essentially crippled after the Second Invasion and they are still behind and while Fortaleza wasn’t critical, economically speaking, it was still an industrialized world with significant secondary mining operations. If the aliens manag to nibble at human capacities like that every time they invade, sooner or later they will win.
JRIMR flat out stated that the three nations must find a way to disrupt this pattern. The safest way to do so would be to find reinforcements. There are other human nations out there, that is a fact and if even one as powerful as Korea could be found it would significantly change the balance of power. The problem is no one knows where they are. Or rather the position of some colonies is known but it is unknown how to get to them through the jump points. More over even if one is found it may chose to ignore the danger or, even worse, use this situation for conquest.
The only other way to disrupt the enemy plans would be to launch an attack. This would be enormously risky, but the enemy has the same problem humans have – they have at least two systems to protect so it should be possible to breach the alien lines if the three nations focus their resources.
Ultimately however there is no political will for an offensive, not so soon after loss of a major system.
After the presentation was over, the officers from the Federation and the Republic approached their governments to give the third part of the presentation, for which Korea was not invited.
As they pointed out DPRK is trying to do their best to gain the upper hand over the other two powers and will be playing with the security of the human race to do so. They flat out stated the third nation will not partake in the defense against the aliens, hoping the other two will bleed. There is currently only one way to try and make them change their mind – to push the defensive line all the way back to Wrota. If that happens it is likely that Korea will start fortifying the system as it is critical to them as well.
As there are only four hundred million people living in Brazilian space, they could be evacuated if given enough time, but resources would be a problem, unless the Federation could begin expanding into Polish territory.
While it is true that this would make the most sense, Brazil is unwilling to do so. For that matter Poland isn’t so sure this would have made DPRK actually commit. The bulk of the Korean economy, including their naval shipbuilding, is now outside Parana and some speculate that they would be more than willing to let Wrota fall, believing themselves capable of defending their space alone. The Brazilians are shocked at this assertion, but some of their officers agree this may be the case.
Ultimately on the strategic level not much will change for now. Korea will likely keep hiding while Poland and Brazil will try to hold the Federal space.

Five kinhalan battlecruisers, each massing nearly eighty three thousand tonnes, jump into the Escudo system which was chosen to be the defensive line against the invaders on the second front.
Due to having only very few ships Korea have refused to station any forces in the system for the time being, but Poland and Brazil have dedicated nearly their entire mobile strength for the picket duty although the ships have to rotate home for overhaul and shore leave. As a result the Republic has two cruisers and six escort cruisers on station, all equipped with short range, interceptor sized missiles while Brazil has six cruisers and ten destroyers.
Jump point assaults are far too quick for humans to interfere so the AIs on the ships chose their firing pattern out of several predefined ones. While the enemy was few in number, those ships were expected to be incredibly though. As a result nearly the entire Brazilian fleet launched their missiles, leaving four of the cruisers in reserve while Poland have limited themselves to their railguns. As the enemy emerged about two hundred and fifty thousand kilometers away, they weren’t going to do much damage, but for now the picket force didn’t want to spend itself in case another wave was coming.
The alien ships have proven even more resilient then expected and only one was destroyed, while the rest fired their own missiles destroying two Brazilian cruisers. The three Federal cruisers that didn’t fire previously and survived fired their missiles, but that was enough to kill only two more enemies.
Poland was asked to use their shipkillers after all, but fortunately only two more salvos were needed.
The entire fight lasted less than two minutes. Brazil was out of ammunition and two cruisers short, but the Polish force was essentially intact. As the other Federal force is currently undergoing overhaul, the ships will stay in place without re-arming. While this will significantly reduce their combat capability, there isn’t much that can be done right now.

A kinhalan fleet arrived in the Parana system. It comprised eleven battleships massing one hundred seventy thousand and two hundred tonnes, supported by seven battlecruisers massing eighty two thousand and eight hundred tonnes, a heavy cruiser massing fifty nine thousand and eight hundred tonnes and ten escort cruisers massing thirty six thousand and eight hundred tonnes. In total the fleet massed nearly two million and nine hundred thousand tonnes, more than what attacked Parana twenty five years ago.
Five of the vessels – one battleship and four battlecruisers – were jump ships. Two smaller ones accompanied the fleet, while the other three stayed at the jump point. After that the armada set course straight for Brazil.

With the invaders keeping their course for nine hours now Poland have decided it is safe enough to fire although if the aliens decide to retreat within the next several hours the entire strike could be wasted.
Baszta have not lain idle during the last twenty five years and whenever it had enough spare missiles, it was building a new base so that all could be fired in a single salvo. This meant there will be only one strike, but the moon could fire thirty six hundred and twenty Osas D.
The massive wave needed nearly fifteen hours to reach their targets. Only a little over a thousand of the eighteen thousand submunitions have been intercepted by the alien point defense, while the rest slammed into the enemy force destroying four battleships, their only remaining heavy cruiser, five battlecruisers and three escort cruisers.
As coordination was impossible and there were fears that missiles could lose lock if their targets were destroyed, Korea have not fired yet. They did so now. They could launch only six thousand missiles and those were of lower quality but all were targeted at the seven remaining escort cruisers which had heavy missile defenses for their size.

The aliens seemed unfazed by the previous strike, continuing towards Brazil. With the range growing ever larger, the Korean strike needed nearly thirty hours to arrive at their target. Nearly twenty seven hundred shipkillers were intercepted by alien anti-missiles, but the rest was enough to kill six escort cruisers and one of the battleships, while also damaging the seventh, and last, cruiser and one of the battleships.
The kinhalan fleet has been reduced to five battleships and a cruiser and it was obvious they have had enough. The ships begun rescuing survivors and turned around towards their entry jump point.
Humans decided not to pursue. Brazil and Poland had quite larger fleets in the system, but those were part of the Escudo picket rotation and were in overhaul. Closing the ships up and preparing them for battle would take nearly a month and while the process begun the moment the enemy arrived, it won’t be completed before they leave. Korea had a ready fleet of four cruisers, but taken together they don’t even have the same tonnage as one of the battleships, making them essentially useless.
While the Republic is spent, Korea still has two thousand missiles they could use, but with the enemy retreating the Parana nations believe it’s better to not fire another salvo as that would give the enemy hard numbers of what is available. Better to make the enemy underestimate the defenders so that they commit insufficient forces in the future.

The enemy fleet have left the system.
The Intelligence have been studying the attack, trying to understand the change in kinhalan strategy, as they attacked much sooner than expected. They believe it has to do with the second front. The five battlecruiser group that invaded Escudo was powerful enough to deal with any tip wire defense and their loss must have been seen by the enemy as a result of a significant fleet deployment, which it was. With that the aliens concluded, correctly, that Parana was essentially stripped of mobile forces and they must have believed they will be able to do at least some damage to infrastructure, potentially keeping Brazil and maybe Korea dawn.
It didn’t work like that, thanks to the new long range missiles, but that isn’t necessary a good thing. It is very likely the enemy will take their time to build a truly monstrous invasion fleet and they will know what they have to deal with now. The Intelligence points out the aliens can do several things that will make their warships much more resistant to damage – they haven’t really improved their sensors, resulting in the same problem Poland and Brazil once had, they still use old missile launchers with ten second cycle time, something they can easily improve before the next attack and, last but not least, they will likely improve the safety of their magazines. The Polish missile strike was accompanied by large number of enormous secondary explosions, the largest of which was nearly seven hundred mega tonnes, equivalent to over two hundred submunitions. If the enemy can improve their safety, their ships will become much more difficult to kill.

As Poland have not expended any anti-missiles, the decision was made for Baszta to focus entirely on the interplanetary munitions. At the current construction rates this means around three hundred and fifty will be constructed every year, meaning the recent expenditure should be replaced within a decade. Marzanna will focus on interceptors and small shipkillers.
In addition a new version of Osa was designed. A couple of years ago the Republic developed new warheads but for the sake of uniformity those weren’t implemented. Now the submunitions will have range of thirty million kilometers rather than ten million. As it is expected the aliens will develop much better sensors, this can easily make the difference between a strike being successful and not. The destructive power haven’t increased however with the Zadlo submunitions still having three mega tonne warheads.

There have been some issues surrounding the most recent alien wrecks. Brazil didn’t participate in Parana plus they never salvaged anything as they had no need, but they still claimed all wrecks in Escudo while claiming none in the home system which was fine with everyone, but Poland and Korea couldn’t agree on how to divide the rest.
The Republic wanted for each power to claim what they killed, but Korea insisted that they should be split evenly since both powers contributed and it was DPRK strike that ultimately made the enemy retreat, even if their strike was smaller in scale. Ultimately Poland won, mostly thanks to Brazilian support, but Korea was not happy.
Those wrecks are important as the Republic desperately needs boronide. In fact production of new fuel harvesters have been suspended due to lack of that particular mineral. The Bogdanka colony is supposed to deal with the issue, but the first mines are still en route and the population is only two hundred thousand. Salvaging will be an important stop gap measure.

Kleczanow have completed its expansion of industry, giving it the same manufacturing power the capital has. Unfortunately the population of nearly two hundred million is insufficient, with shortages causing the industry to operate at only eighty percent efficiency. For now the planet will focus on production of orbital habitats for other colonies.
The government has been aware of the problem for some time and has been trying to solve the issue by increasing the number of state owned colony ships, but that is simply not enough, at least not yet. Civilian shipping lines are also not the answer. There are ninety privately owned vessels, but as there was no large scale colonization in the past, most of those are freighters with only fourteen colony ships in operation. Worse they are almost all small vessels below twenty five thousand tonnes so their carrying capacity is only a fraction of what the government is capable of.

One thing that has been worrying the government about their defenses is their utter reliance on anti-missiles. Gauss cannons and railguns were being used, but only on ships that were usually in orbit around Marzanna. However over the past years the research sector have provided new gauss cannons that had range of forty thousand kilometers. As Baszta orbits the capital at mere twenty seven thousand kilometers, this meant the moon bases would be able to cover the planet as well. Now the design process is finally complete and Poland can build a planetary defense center armed with twenty four quad gass cannons that can intercept up to three hundred and eighty four incoming missiles, all without any use of ammunition.
While impressive, there are some drawbacks, the greatest of which is the cost. Baszta will be able to build only one of those each year, assuming their entire industry focuses on the task. Moreover due to tracking speeds it is very likely the accuracy will be around thirty three percent which means each base will be able to intercept only a little over a hundred missiles in practice. Nonetheless the new base is considered an important part of the future defenses and Baszta will be building them whenever possible.

Poland have finally managed to re-arm their missile bases. Korea on the other hand have been static for several decades now, being able to launch six thousand missiles at once. This is due to them using their bases quite often, their need to focus on their economic recovery after Second Invasion and thanks to progressing technology they had to replace their ordnance a couple of times. The Intelligence doesn’t have hard numbers but it is believed they can fire one full salvo of quite old missiles with reach of only four hundred million kilometers, full salvo of the same ordnance they have used during the Third Invasion and they are now working on arming their bases with newest models. Those are minimum estimates but it is very unlikely Korea can fire two salvos of any given type of munitions.

The population of Kleczanow now exceeds that of Baszta. Both bodies have population of around three hundred and fifty million but the former is habitable while the latter requires orbital habitats.
Kleczanow still has slight manpower shortages although this is mostly due to ongoing production of ordnance facilities. In the future the planet will be the primary naval shipbuilding center and the government wants the new ships to be fully combat ready, including ammunition, hence the current industrial project. Nonetheless for now there are only four shipyards in orbit of the planet, set to build light cruisers for patrol so it will take years, possibly decades, before the rest can be brought in.
Baszta on the other hand will likely no longer expand. Up until now production of new military bases was limited due to available ammunition, allowing the moon to produce new habitats whenever it could spare the industry. However with the design of the gauss cannon armed bases, the colony can continuously build military hardware, leaving no room for expansion. Having said that it is likely that other colonies will build habitats for Baszta.
There are other Republican colonies, but those are mostly static. Marzannas moon of Pniewy has population of two million and has not been expanded since its inception as it is a small mining location that is almost depleted. The dwarf planet of Turow has population of twenty eight million and produces duranium and neutronium but due to its exposed position the government is not willing to invest further.
The mining colonies of Belchatow and Bogdanka are also housed in orbital habitats and have population of twenty one million each. They may be expanded in the future, especially Belchatow due to its deposits of gallicite, but for now those colonies are considered to be reasonably sized.
Wieliczka will likely be expanded further. It has population of less than nine million but medium sized habitats are en route and once they arrive they will allow the population to increase to thirty million. The moon is primarily a mining location but its located close to the star and bathed in unusual radiation that will increase the speed of any research into sensors by sixty percent. So far this potential have remained untapped, but the government hopes that now that the mineral situation is more or less secure, they will be able to expand the colony enough to take advantage of that opportunity.
Aside from the inhabited colonies, Poland operates fifty five mining vessels, scattered throughout their space. Taken together they have output equal to over sixteen hundred mines and for the money spent on them the government could have bought thirty cruisers. Unfortunately due to how spread out they are it is impossible to protect them.

With their mineral situation more or less secure and most colonies grown to a target level, Poland have been slowly planning to finally establish a naval base at Escudo, something that was delayed due to kinhalan attack in 3306, which was believed to give humans time to sort out their issues before they had to return to militarization. However there was an unexpected development – Brazil no longer wanted them there.
The Federation have done an extraordinary job rebuilding their forces after they’ve lost their yards during the Second Kinhalan Invasion of 3282. By now their fleet comprises fifty four ships – thirty three cruisers and twenty one destroyers. Numerically speaking it is the largest force ever deployed, even larger than the alien fleet although in tonnage terms it is less than half of what was thrown at Parana during the last two attacks. For comparison Poland has only thirty warships, although the old and obsolete destroyers and frigates are not counted, which adds up to only about sixty percent as much tonnage.
That however is only half of the story. The colony of Fortaleza de Gelo in the Escudo system have been growing rapidly with population exceeding one hundred and thirty million and industry comprising mining, terraforming, fuel production and fleet support. Not only that but space stations have been deployed to the jump point to allow the warships to stay there permanently. As a result the entire Brazilian force is right on top of the jump point, ready to fire all they have at the invaders the moment they appear and before they can recover from transit effects.
But the Federation does not intend to end there. They have twelve old, small orbital stations around Amazonia that will be moved to the jump point. While they mass fifteen thousand and six hundred tonnes, far less than one of their cruisers, they have neither engines nor fuel storage and as a result they can fire one hundred large, interplanetary missiles and four hundred anti-missiles, or the recently designed small shipkillers, at once. Moreover the capital is now protected by thirty four larger and newer bases, so this won’t make much dent in their defense.
Those are the most immediate plans, but the Brazilian government also intends to build new shipyards in Escudo as soon as its manpower issues are resolved. Their ultimate goal is to have a total of twenty four yards split equally between the two frontline systems with twelve building orbital bases for both planets, six building warships and six building space forts to be placed at the jump point.
In addition the Intelligence believes Brazil have designed a two stage, extended range missile for both their large launchers on their orbital bases and their smaller launchers on board their ships. Those were also designed in such a way that a combined strike was possible. The exact numbers are not available but the Amazonian bases are believed to be able to fire fifty one hundred to eighty five hundred missiles, as many as Korean ground bases. Their fleet should be able to fire around sixty five hundred missiles. This means that if the fleet was in orbit of Amazonia, the Federation could fire a wave of missiles nearly as large as what Poland was capable of.
Last but not least Brazil is now expending their yards to build the first human battlecruisers and battlecruiser sized orbital installations. And while some within the Polish Intelligence community are doubtful that the Federation has the resources to accomplish all of this, they always were the most secure nation minerals wise and they are expending their extraction operations. Mines are already in place in the Fortaleza de Gelo colony and they intend to establish a brand new one in another system, although that one will require orbital habitats to function.
Due to all of that Brazil believes they no longer need a Polish missile base in the system to protect their space. The Federation was always isolationist and while they weren’t fanatical enough for their ideology to overcome their common sense, their newfound strength makes them go back to their old practices. However they have not yet requested that Poland withdrew their picket.
While in theory this is good news for the Republic as it means another nation will take full responsibility, and costs, of protecting the human space, this is in reality a very bad situation for Marzanna. The Wrota system must be protected at all costs or Poland will fall and having a base at the front line, together with another nation would be the best option. With that possibility no longer on the table, the Republic will have to build their own fortification at the Wrota system which will be much more difficult due to location of jump points and won’t be as effective if other nations aren’t participating.
Most likely Poland will simply invest more heavily in their fleet. The government already begun taking steps towards that, building four new shipyards in Marzanna that are being expanded to build cruisers and will be moved to Kleczanow as soon as manpower is available. This will double the number of their primary warships the Republic can build and eventually those will be expanded in size as well. As the Wrota system is only nine days from the capital and forty one days from the Escudo system, redeployment will be easy, assuming of course Brazil will warn the other nations if their defenses are breached.
A colony may be established in the Wrota system so that any redeployed ships could stay there indefinitely, but that is currently just a proposal that may not be implemented.

The population of Kleczanow have exceeded six hundred and ten million, allowing Poland to move all naval yards from Baszta to the colony. Four more will be moved soon, as they are finishing expansion above the capital, although this will likely mean Kleczanow will have manpower shortages for some time. Once that is done the Republic will be capable of building eight cruisers and six light cruisers at the same time and once the worker issue is resolved, those will finally begin expanding to build something even larger.
Despite having one fifth of Marzannas population, Kleczanow is not the largest planet by population outside Parana – the Korean colony of Chogjin is, being inhabited by over six hundred and sixty million people. Despite that the moon have been effectively abandoned by the DPRK government once they begun developing Kangwon, which has grown to three hundred and sixty million people.
The only other colony outside Parana with population exceeding a hundred million is the Brazilian world of Fortelaza de Gelo, inhabited by one hundred and ninety million people.

Poland developed magnetic confinement fusion drive, allowing them to design new version of their warships and missiles. Their combat vessels will now travel sixty eight hundred and seventy five kilometers per second. For now the government plans to use this opportunity to upgrade all vessels to newest standard, as there are three generations of cruisers and light cruisers, but if the time or costs end up being too high, a simple engine replacement for each version may be chosen.
Another issue will be building sufficient ammunition to replace what is currently used. For example the missile bases on Baszta can now fire a total of over nine and a half thousand Osas with over two thousand of the newest ones in storage, as there was no time to build missile bases to house them. This will take the moon over twenty years to do so, during which time the Republican strike capacity won’t be improving. The one piece of good news is that with the yards gone, Baszta can enlarge its missile production sector though not by much.
This new technology is very welcome news for the government. Both Brazil and Korea have developed internal confinement fusion drives which the Republic have been using so far, although the two nations are still implementing those. What is a real problem however is the fact that Unity usually has technology equal to those two nations, so they are also on the same level, at the very least.

The first six Brazilian battlecruisers arrived in Escudo to reinforce the picket there, bringing the total number of Federal ships to twelve forts, nineteen destroyers (two were detached for picket duties), thirty six cruisers and the six new arrivals for a total of over one million and eight hundred thousand tonnes of death ready to fire while the aliens are still addled from transit effects.
The Polish picket force is split in two as they don’t have a base in the system, which forces ships to rotate. As such on station, at any give time, are only seven light cruisers and seven cruisers. Now that eight yards are operational the force should grow more rapidly, but it is obvious that unless those ships receive support they will always be far inferior to what the Federation can bring.
Due to all this Brazil believes it will be best for the Polish forces to withdraw from the system. As they point out the Republican ships don’t add up much to the defense of Escudo while also being unable to protect Parana. Worse, with Korea keeping all their ships in Kangwon, the home system is essentially without a mobile force.

Poland delivered seven medium sized habitats to the third planet of the Wrota system, named Niedzica. This will become the main naval base of the Polish navy and should be able to react to the invasion of the capital, assuming the enemy will keep the previous operational patter and goes after Brazil first, while also being deployed closer to the front in the Brazilian space. The planet can now house over thirty two million people but actually building up the necessary facilities will take significant amount of time.
The habitats were originally destined for Wieliczka, but the colony will have to support itself alone for the time being. Considering the huge build up that was necessary to establish an R&D sector, the government decided to take it a step further and industrialize the colony. While the population is seventy five million, there are enough habitats for over a hundred and ten million and the planet already has industrial capacity equal to forty percent of what the capital is capable of. For now there aren’t enough people to expend it further, but it is enough for the planet to start building its own habitats. Logistical networks have also been reworked to ensure steady supply of minerals for the colony as while it has significant mining sector, many resources are in minimal accessibility.

The Polish sensors and tracking stations detected six more Brazilian battlecruisers moving out of Parana system, most likely to join the picket in Escudo. While a significant reinforcement, it is becoming obvious that the shipbuilding rate of the Federation have decreased significantly, most likely due to them running out of prefabricated components.
It is unlikely that Brazil will ever hit their previous tempo again. Most components have been manufactured while shipyards were expanding. More over the Intelligence is certain that the Federation is suffering resource issues and their entire industry is currently dedicated to solving the problem. It is uncertain if they have any shortages, although if they do, they don’t seem to impact naval spending, but even so their industry simply cannot be distracted from expansion of the mining colonies. This also means Brazil haven’t even begun implementing their plan to build new naval shipyards above Fortalaza de Gelo and it may be decades before they can start working on the project. This only further reinforces the need for Poland to expand their own fleet.

Due to gallicite shortages Marzanna suspends production of missiles. The capital has a thousand ordnance factories, producing primarily anti-missiles and interceptor sized shipkillers.
Baszta and Kleczanow will continue their own production however. Marzanna is at the very end of the logistical networks and both of those bodies have been able to continue production of ammunition and refit of warships, so there is enough extraction for that. Resources are also redirected towards securing more of the mineral – the Belchatow colony is being expanded and new mining ships are moving towards comets with gallicite deposits. Still it will take time for the situation to stabilize, but the Navy will continue to grow, just a little bit slower.

Korea have launched the largest human ship to date, a one million tonne tug.
While it is essentially impossible to gather information about the nation from their sources due to every information channel being state propaganda, observations show that Korea is heavily improving their mining output from Parana colonies, but it is also almost certain that those colonies don’t have enough resources to sustain DPRK long term. And while nothing is known about their own space, using the Polish systems as baseline it is almost certain that worlds with any colonization potential simply don’t have necessary resources unless the other side got unreasonably lucky. As such they will need to start moving habitats over interstellar distances and tugs like this are a good solution for that problem.
Poland also has a similar shipyard that is retooling for a very similar tug, although one with more advanced engines, but it is unknown when the first one will be laid dawn due to current gallicite issues. Even so the Republic is in a good place, as they have nine tugs massing two hundred and fifty thousand tonnes that can move nine medium sized habitats from Kleczanow to Wieliczka in two years. That is faster than those can be produced by a single world, although if distances were greater, for example by having those built on Marzanna, that would of course change. Even so larger ship would significantly simplify logistics and would allow use of larger habitats.

One of the largest problems for Poland have always been available freight capacity. While the government operated a lot of cargo ships, those were necessary to move minerals from various comets to the industrialized worlds, leaving very little to move around actual installations. Now however the problem is being solved thanks to four commercial yards that have been expanded from one hundred thousand to two hundred and fifty thousand tonnes and are constructing new freighters and colony ships.
By now the only habitable planet in the nation, Kleczanow, has population of one billion and one hundred and fifty million, giving it more than enough manpower to not only man all the existing installations but also to allow expansion, while also making it the most populous human world outside the Parana system. More importantly however that is over a quarter of the planets capacity. Because of this and thanks to the new freighters the government decided the time has come to establish a new colony.
The pickings are slim. For all instances and purposes there are no colonizable bodies with any mineral deposits of note. Many other worlds are also not very inviting. In the end the decision is made to colonize the third planet in the Solidarnosc system, the same star orbited by Kleczanow.
The planet is a low density superterrestrial with dense atmosphere of carbon dioxide and nitrogen and, consequently, very high temperature. As a result the world will require over fifty percent more infrastructure than Mars would. However once terraformed the planet will have habitability score of six, similar to Kleczanow, but will also be much larger, capable of housing over thirty billion people. That single fact is the primary reason the planet have been chosen.
   The world is renamed Gdansk.

Marzanna resumes production of missiles. While it took them eleven years, nothing else was impacted – ships were being constructed and upgraded, Baszta was building more interplanetary munitions and Kleczanow was manufacturing Iglas and Wlocznias for the fleet.
One interesting consequence of the interruption was the fate of the gauss cannon armed bases that were being deployed on Baszta. Those were something of a filler, a useful construct to be built when production of more valuable bases outstripped missile manufacturing, and that is precisely what happened, but due to the interruption a total of twenty eight are now operational on Baszta. More over those represent four different generations with the newest ones having not only better firing rates but also tracking speeds. As a result the moon can fire a wall of thirteen thousand slugs against any incoming salvo. And while due to hit chances this likely adds to between three and four thousand missiles, the aliens design their ships to launch five salvos, which means the bases may end up intercepting up to twenty thousand alien munitions all by their own.

While the Polish long range missile strike during the Third Invasion was a resounding success, the military knew from the beginning that it had a weak link – the spotter ship. If it could be destroyed, then the strike could not be launched.
Ultimately it is impossible to completely guarantee security of such a vessel, but the navy realized there is a way to significantly decrease the options available to the enemy by making it much harder to detect and target through implementation of stealth characteristics. The research have been ongoing ever since and a new design if finally ready in the form of Projekt 047 light cruiser.
Like other ships of that designation, she masses sixteen thousand tonnes, but her cross section is only one thousand and six hundred tonnes, making her essentially impossible to target from the spotting distance, unless very specialized sensors and fire controls are used and the enemy has no reason to use those. Moreover while she has an additional engine to make it easier for her to perform her task and can move at eight thousand, two hundred and fifty kilometers per second, those engines have reduced thermal signature. Last but not least the sensor itself is designed to be as weak as possible while still having the necessary range. Depending on what the aliens are equipped with, they may not even realize they are being shadowed, or painted for missiles. She has no offensive armament and only eight gauss cannons, but her armor is quite heavy. It will take time before first ships are even laid dawn, but they will take over the scouting duty.
The stealth systems however ended up being useful for one other type of ships – exploration vessels. A new version of such was designed, the Projekt 048. She is also sixteen thousand tonnes, can deploy drones and has significantly increased range and survey capabilities, but as there is nothing to survey right now, those ships are even further away from deployment.

Wieliczka begins construction of the first Polish Bishops Ring, although a smaller one than what Brazilians have built that will be able to house eighty million people.
The colony has grown to one hundred and fifty seven million people, but the government is no longer providing new habitats as those are necessary for other projects. It also has seventy percent as much industry as Marzanna which, together with the mining sector, employs all available manpower. The Ring, which will take about a decade to manufacture, will provide enough living space for Wieliczka to enlarge the industry to its maximum size, the second will finally allow establishment of an R&D sector and the one after that will allow enlargement of the mining sector.

Twenty three years after introduction of magnetic confinement fusion drives the refits of the main Polish fleet are finally complete. The time scale is considered intolerable and in the future the navy will no longer strive to keep all vessels up to the newest standards. Instead once several upgrades are ready, they will be implemented into a nominally new design and future upgrades will either not happen or will include only the engines due to the importance of speed in the Republican doctrine. This can easily lead to a situation where a warship would have newest drives and a hundred year old guns, but more hulls are desperately needed.
The fleet comprises twenty two cruisers and fourteen light cruisers with combined mass of a little over a million tonnes and is stationed on Niedzica. The planet has population of fifty million and enough space in habitats for one hundred and ten million but both Kleczanow and Marzanna continue to build orbital habitats for the planet as more will be needed. The government wants Niedzica to be another industrialized world that, instead of receiving constant support from outside, will be able to support the fleet on its own and will also develop its own defenses. That will require significantly larger population than what is currently available.
The size of the Korean fleet is unknown as they have moved all their naval yards into their space and haven’t sent many ships to Parana. They have at least eight naval yards and those had enough time to expand to build battlecruisers or battleships, but it is unlikely, though not impossible, that DPKR is building something that large.
Brazil has massive fleet of nineteen destroyers, thirty six cruisers and eighteen battlecruisers with combined tonnage of around two and a half million tonnes – nearly as much as the aliens have thrown at humanity during the Second and Third Invasions. Despite that however all this firepower is glued to the jump point in the Escudo system which means the Federation may as well not have a fleet. They have built new yards that will build space fortresses, but those are still expanding to build even the smallest of those. For that matter Brazil is still fully focused on solving their mineral issues and it is unknown when they will be able to expand their military production.
Poland however is doing mostly fine, although gallicite is still in rather tight supply. Moreover the refit process gave them a lot of time to expand their shipbuilding and now the eight primary yards are retooling to build the first Polish battlecruisers.
The Projekt 046 is one hundred and two thousand and four hundred tonnes, half again as large as the Brazilian battlecruisers. Her primary armament consists of thirty six railguns, each with caliber of four hundred millimeters and is supported by ten gauss cannons and eighty anti-missile launchers with nearly two and a half thousand rounds in her magazines. She also has thirty decimeters of armor while also having the standard fleet speed of six thousand, eight hundred and seventy five kilometers per second. In short her entry into Republican service will herald an enormous leap in the Polish capabilities but between retooling and construction of the first ships it will be over a decade before those are deployed.

The leaders and government representatives from all three nations have met face to face for the first time in the Brazilian capital of Nuovo Rio, located on Amazonia.
The meeting did not start well. First the Federation begun berating Poland and Korea for their war in 3243 which weakened them and made them use precious ammunition only for the two powers to point out Brazil have wasted time as well. Two weeks after the invasion begun they finished building a second Bishop’s Ring in orbit and the two constructs required over twenty years of Amazonian industrial output. Moreover the Federation was the most secure one in terms of minerals but they were holding back on their naval projects.
After that was done, talks begun about the future, but there wasn’t much that could be done. Poland and Korea hated each other and even if that wasn’t the case all three powers were jockeying for dominant position in the system. The Republic wasn’t willing to give away their technology as that was their only advantage and Brazil wasn’t willing to give away their minerals which were the reason they could afford something like the Rings.
A unified command structure was also out of the question. During both invasions the invading fleet had to be ground dawn by static defenses and by the time it was done the enemy was weak enough for the three nations to win even without coordination. Besides there was the question of trust. No one trusted the leader not to use the combined fleets to protect their interests first and no one trusted the other fleets to obey if that was the perception of the orders.
In the end the only thing that was agreed upon was to share information regarding the aliens, something the three nations were already doing. They’ve also agreed however to exchange officers and create a sort of an independent body to try and come up with unified plans of actions. Such body will have no power however other than presenting their advice.
The only other item that was negotiated were the wrecks. Both Poland and Korea need any resources they can get and both nations have already sent salvage fleets to begin work on their own dead ships, but there was still the question of the aliens. The Republic claimed any ships that were destroyed by their defenses and DPRK did the same, but that left a lot of them out and there was also a certain imbalance.
Brazil tried to use the fact they don’t need the wrecks as a bargaining chip, but the other two powers weren’t interested. In the end Korea, which contributed the least during the final battle, was given rights to all destroyer and cruiser wrecks near the jump point. Poland got the four battlecruisers there and Brazil got all the battleships.

Poland have developed Osa D which, despite the letter, is a modification and not an upgrade of Osa C. It has the same five submunitions but the speed of the main bus has been lowered from sixteen thousand kilometers per second to ten thousand kilometers per second. Together with improved fuel efficiency this gave the missile range of nearly one and a half billion kilometers.
No sensor can reach that far, but the Polish military realized the sensor does not need to be with the launchers. In the future scouts will be used to illuminate targets for those missiles.
The jump point to enemy territory is almost seven hundred million kilometers away. This means that even if a newly arrived enemy force would move directly away from Marzanna, those missiles would still catch them. Even so the extremely long flight of nearly two days will require some careful timing to ensure targets can’t jump back or use Lagrange points to lose the missiles.
Production rates are still a problem however and those won’t be solved for years, if not decades, to come.

Korea have colonized a planet they named Kangwon. This is their second colony outside Parana system but what is unusual is that the world is not habitable for normal humans. Apparently they used volunteers to modify them for this planet.
It is unknown whether or not those were actually volunteers, but what is important is that the huge world is now almost habitable for them. They will need to remove some carbon dioxide for easier breathing and lower temperature but that’s it. However despite the ease of colonization and development the genetic engineering afforded them, the planet isn’t a great prize aside from living space and security. It has habitable rating of five, which is considered low and there are no interesting mineral deposits.

It’s been nearly five years since the invasion and Poland have just delivered three hundred mines to Turow. All wrecks have been salvaged and all cometary mining groups moved plus two new mining vessels have been launched. Overall the Republic is well on its way towards ensuring a steady mineral supply.
Fuel is also no longer a big issue. Over twenty million liters are in storage on Baszta and Marzanna with current production being more than enough for all ongoing operations. Unfortunately it is not even close enough to allow transportation of orbital habitats over interstellar distances. Worse the available freighter fleet is still far too small. As an example the government decided to move a hundred manned and four hundred automated mines to Wieliczka. The process begun nearly twenty years ago and is still only seventy five percent complete. Kleczanow receives almost no support although it has a very larger terraforming operation ongoing so within a decade, two at the outside, it should be fully habitable. Overall the nation is stable, but its infrastructure and logistics are still far too small for its needs.
On the military front not much have happened. Two new escort cruisers have been launched and most warships have been repaired. Only ORP Marlbork is still in the yards, as she was the most heavily damaged. The first cruiser have also been upgraded to the F variant. The refits are controversial as they take a lot of time and many people believe it would have been better to go the kinhalan route and just build as many ships as possible with either no or at least very limited refits. However this newest one is considered essential. Like Brazil, Poland have neglected improvements in sensors and fire controls and while it wasn’t as damaging for them as it was for the Republic the F variant has twice the engagement range against incoming missiles. She also has greater speed and some other small changes. As such the government plans to refit all existing ships to that version, albeit only one at a time.
Baszta have also expanded its ordnance manufacturing industry, albeit only slightly, ceased production of recon drones and put slightly greater focus on Osas. As a result the production rates have risen from a little over seventy per year to nearly one hundred and forty per year. Four hundred are in storage, enough to equip one of the large bases, but that’s it. The moon also has slight manpower shortages. Both Marzanna and Baszta itself are building additional habitats to deal with the issue and the population of the moon has exceeded two hundred million about two years ago, giving it about one eight the population of the homeworld.
Other nations are also working hard on rebuilding. Brazil have built twelve naval yards which are being expanded, although half of them will be used to build orbital defenses. Korea have finished expanding their industry and are now building mines. They’ve also launched their first heavy cruiser massing nearly forty thousand tonnes, but not much is known about her.

Poland launches ORP Cedynia, their largest warship yet. She masses thirty eight thousand and four hundred tonnes, has twice as many anti-missile launchers and gauss cannons as the Projekt 019F class light cruiser, carries a thousand anti-missiles, have better sensor suite and has ten railguns rather than three.
She is the first vessel of the Projekt 030 class and is classified as a cruiser. This was confusing for some people, including some in the government, as similarly sized Korean vessel was classified as a heavy cruiser while Projekt 019 with a similar armament mix was considered an escort. Because of this the navy decided to unify their nomenclature.
The Polish escort designation comes from the introduction of anti-missiles. Initial Republican warships were armed only with railguns and gauss cannons until the destroyer escort was created to make it easy to discern its different armament mix. The Projekt 019 continued this tradition.
The simple truth however is that Poland will never adopt offensive missiles due to the very small size of their industry and military but by the same token they absolutely need interceptors to get close to their enemy to employ their heavy armor and railguns. The potency of that doctrine was shown during the newest invasion where, during the last battle near the jump point, the Polish fleet was doing quite well against much larger opponent. Because of this anti-missile armed vessels are now considered mainstream combatants rather then escorts. Consequently the Projekt 019 was reclassified as a light cruiser.
As for the sizes, different nations classify ships differently and Koreans are calling their vessel a heavy cruiser. The Polish military decided to utilize their own nomenclature when describing warships. Below are the size brackets that will be used:

1000T-8000T: Frigate
8001T-12000T: Destroyer
12001T-2000T: Light Cruiser
20001T-40000T: Cruiser
40001T-60000T: Heavy cruiser
60001-120000T: Battlecruiser
120001T and above: Battleship

Consequently some foreign ships were redesignated, at least in the internal Polish documentation. The new Korean ships are now classified as cruisers, same as the Republican ships, while the largest kinhalan warships have been demoted.
In addition, to give the government better understanding of the situation, they’ve also presented comparison between the four existing nations in terms of building practices. In general terms Poland is the only power that does not use offensive missiles, with the exception of their bases while Korea and Brazil do not utilize gauss cannons. In terms of engines, Korea uses middle of the road power to fuel efficiency settings and dedicates twenty five percent of their ships mass to engines. Their newest ships haven’t left orbit yet but they are believed to be capable of four thousand kilometers per second.
Poland uses engines ten percent more powerful than ‘standard’ settings in order to dictate range, a consequence of their tactical doctrine of close range combat. Coupled with superior technology, their newest ships are capable of five thousand and five hundred kilometers per second.
Brazil is focused on payload and as a result dedicates only twenty percent of their ships mass to engines. Consequently they are believed to be capable of only three thousand and two hundred kilometers, making them potentially the slowest power, at least if technology is equal. Kinhalans are only slightly faster, capable of thirty six hundred kilometers per second. This is due to their engines having better fuel efficiency, possibly for extended range.
Poland uses railguns as their primary short range weapon. Brazil and the Unity use lasers. Korea uses plasma carronades. Unity is the only power to use shields on their ships, and only on their largest ones.
Below is the list of known ships by type. Please note that no hard data on designs of other nations exists. This is all observation, extrapolation of known data and publicly available facts that may or may not be true. The Polish designs are described accurately.

Poland is the only nation to use this type of warships, designed when Marzanna was much smaller and poorer. Five remain in service but have never been upgraded and are obsolete, used for picket duties simply because no other warships are available. The Republic does not plan to build any more ships of this type.
The Projekt 004 frigate is equipped with four, small railguns of two hundred millimeter caliber. They have quite heavy, nine decimeter armor.

Destroyers are common warships, however they are used primarily for picket duty although they are also often supporting larger vessels during an all out combat. Kinhalans use the most basic vessels, armed with eighty missiles in one shot box launchers and three light lasers all wrapped in thin armor of four decimeters. They mass nine thousand and two hundred tonnes.
Brazil is using the largest destroyers as they were their primary combatant before the war. Massing eleven thousand and five hundred tonnes, those are heavily armed multi-role vessels, even more potent since Federation uses lighter missiles for their warships than Unity or Korea. As a result their destroyers carry two lasers, sixty missiles and two hundred and forty anti-missiles, all in single shot box launchers. Unfortunately their defensive fire controls are too short for modern combat although this will likely be corrected. Their armor is uncertain, but quite heavy for ships this small, between nine and fourteen decimeters.
The Federation would like to move away from destroyers as they don’t have much territory to patrol and prefer to focus on larger warships that can properly challenge kinhalans. Unfortunately due to losing their yards yet again they will almost certainly build more of them, while also upgrading the old ones to be useful. Six are in service.
Korea fields destroyers massing nine thousand and six hundred tonnes armed with one plasma carronade, thirty missiles and eighty anti-missiles in single shot box launchers. They have moderate armor of six to nine decimeters. Five are in service and they are considered to be weak and borderline useless, similar to Polish frigates.
The Republic utilizes two different kind of destroyers, the Projekt 011 and the Projekt 014, both massing nine thousand six hundred tonnes. The former is armed with four light railguns, two gauss cannon turrets and have heavy armor of twelve decimeters. The latter is armed with three railguns, sixteen anti-missile launchers and three hundred Iglas, but has no gauss cannons and the armor is quite thin at eight decimeters.
Those vessels were once the core of the Polish navy but they suffered heavy loses. Both classes add up to seven vessels, used for pickets. As Poland never lost their yards, they have for all instances and purposes abandoned warships of this size.

For the human nations cruisers are their main combatant, although this is mostly due to their inability to build anything larger, due to their yards being consistently blown up or, in case of Poland, lacking manpower and resources. The aliens utilize them as well.
The kinhalan version is armed with two to three lasers, depending on generation, eighty missile launchers and forty anti-missile launchers all wrapped in a rather thin armor of eight decimeters. The exact number of carried interceptors is unknown but extrapolated to be between twelve and fifteen hundred, more than their larger warships. This, coupled with the rest of the armament, makes it obvious it was designed as an escort, mostly likely to counter the missile bases. However the Intelligence also believes such ships may be used for patrol and picket duties.
Their heavy cruisers (formerly battlecruisers) mass fifty nine thousand and eight hundred tonnes. They have twelve lasers, sixty repeatable missile launchers with three hundred rounds and twenty four anti-missile launchers with seven hundred to a thousand rounds. Her shields can absorb one hundred and forty mega tonnes of damage but her armor is surprisingly mediocre, between ten and fifteen decimeters.
Brazil operates one cruiser type massing twenty five thousand, five hundred and fifty tonnes. She is armed with five lasers, one hundred and sixty missiles in single shot launchers and anti-missiles, the configuration of which depends on the generation of the ship. Older ones carried four hundred single shot launchers, while the newer ones have thirty launchers with over six hundred shots in the magazines. The armor of the current generation vessels is fifteen decimeters.
Korea has four types of cruisers. Two of those are jump ships designed to escort others through a jump point and their exact capabilities are unknown but limited, due to the size of the jump engines.
As for the actual combat types, one dates back to before the war and masses nineteen thousand and two hundred tonnes. Unfortunately as they were not present during the Korean War of 3242 and all their new ones were destroyed in alien space outside Polish survey capabilities, her armament is much more difficult to discern. She is believed to carry at least a couple of carronades, and around a hundred missiles. Interestingly Korea have always used repeatable anti-missile launchers on their ships, even when those weren’t quite ready, and she probably have between twelve and twenty of them with around two hundred to four hundred shots. Guessing her armor is next to impossible, but depending on her armament it may be as thin as six decimeters or as thick as twelve decimeters.
Recently DPRK have been launching cruisers massing thirty eight thousand and four hundred tonnes, but even less is known about them. The class almost certainly have standard Korean mix of carronades, box launchers for their offensive ammunition and repeatable launchers for anti-missiles, but how exactly did they divide the space is unknown.
Poland operates two types of cruisers and will add a third one. The most numerous is the Projekt 019 light cruisers which currently comes in the E and F variants. There are a total of fourteen of them and they are all in one, main battle fleet, never wasted on picket duties. She has three railguns, two gauss cannon turrets and sixteen anti-missile launchers with five hundred and twenty rounds, all wrapped in fourteen decimeters of armor.
The new Projekt 030 class cruiser masses thirty eight thousand and four hundred tonnes and is equipped with ten railguns, four gauss cannon turrets and thirty two anti-missile launchers with one thousand and forty rounds. She has sixteen decimeters of armor.
Poland have also designed Projekt 038 class light cruiser. The one surprise during the Korean War was the survival of the ORP Notec which was attacked from point blank range by a DPRK destroyer. Both ships were similarly sized, but the Polish one won very one sidedly. Admittedly she had technological advantage and most of the Korean missiles missed, but even so her armor was so heavy that even if most have hit, she would have likely still survived and her heavy short range firepower would have shattered her enemy just as easily. This combat was used as a guidance to develop a new dedicated picket and patrol ship, something the Republic desperately needs as very few areas are being guarded. Wieliczka, being developed as a major mining and R&D site is unprotected and jump points to Guardian space are not picketed.
The Projekt 038 masses sixteen thousand tonnes and has sensor suite similar to that of Projekt 030, twice her size. She has no anti-missiles but she has four of the newest, heaviest railguns supported by four gauss cannon turrets. All of that is wrapped in sixteen decimeters of armor.
Poland currently has seven naval yards, two of which are close to finishing expansion. One is used to slowly upgrade the light cruisers, three are used to build the new Projekt 030 class cruisers and three will be used to build Projekt 038 light cruisers.

The only nation operating battlecruisers is the Unity, although those were originally classified as battlships. They mass eighty two thousand and two hundred tonnes, carry twelve lasers, albeit heavier ones than their heavy cruisers, have one hundred missile launchers with five hundred rounds and twenty four anti-missile launchers with one thousand to fifteen hundred rounds. Their shields can absorb two hundred and fifty mega tonnes of damage and they have relatively heavy armor of sixteen to twenty two decimeters.

Korea begun moving one of their two remaining naval yards out of their home planet. According to the official releases it won’t be moved to Chogjin in Bialowieza as originally planned but all the way to Kangwon.
The planet is growing slowly due to the distances and limited civilian fleet, but the population have recently exceeded ten million, more than enough to support the very limited remaining Korean military shipbuilding although the colony would have to grow a lot for commercial shipbuilding to fit there.

Poland have received latest information from their survey ships. The nation no longer has any routes to expand as all of them are blocked by the Guardians.

It is believed that Poland isn’t the only nation facing this problem. Korean survey ships are in near constant use, but very suspiciously there are only three of them and their comings and goings appear a little too regular. As for Brazil little is known about what they found. They are interested only in mineral deposits and don’t publish their findings, officially to prevent kinhalans from analyzing their strategic situation. They continue exploring, but they haven’t developed their space in any way and no one aside from survey crews have visited those stars.
For the time being this means the Republic has to make do with what they have. They cannot possibly fight even the weakest of the Guardian battle groups, especially with the threat posed by Unity unresolved.

While Kleczanow is not yet fully habitable, the infrastructure requirements have fallen so much the nine orbital habitats that were used to house terraforming specialists are no longer needed. As such they are being moved to Belchatow, a moon in the Pogranicze system that has over four million tonnes of gallicite at maximum accessibility, and over sixty seven million tonnes of medium accessibility duranium. All other elements are also present, but are either in minimal accessibility or not really relevant right now.
For the longest time the biggest problem for Poland was mercassium, critical in building orbital habitats, but that problem is mostly solved now thanks to new cometary mining locations and Wieliczka. At the moment gallicite and duranium are in the greatest risk of shortages.
There should be enough fuel to move all nine habitats but moving more over interstellar distances is still not feasible.

Poland delivers first naval yard to Kleczanow. It is one of the smaller ones, capable of building warships up to sixteen thousand tonnes and will be used to build light cruisers for picket and patrol. Two mores similar yards will be moved but the population of the moon is not yet large enough to support more, especially since the government wants to establish ammunition production first, so that any actual warships constructed would sail to the front with full magazines.
As Baszta had manpower shortages, this will merely allow it to operate industry at full capacity. However the habitats are still growing in numbers, primarily due to new construction coming from Marzanna so new ordnance factories will be added in the near future.

A couple of weeks ago Brazil requested high ranking representatives from the other two nations, being extremely insistent of this and refusing to elaborate over any networks due to possibility of leaks. The delegations finally arrived and their worst fears were confirmed – a second front has been opened.
On tenth of June, 3293 a Federal survey ship entered a new system and detected transponder codes of several civilian ships, with coding definitely being kinhalan in origin. As the jump points were not stabilized it was hoped the enemy was not aware of this particular chain of stars. Exploration ships were sent as a pickets several jumps in while Brazil expanded stabilized jump point network to hopefully establish a naval base to protect their space, which they intended to exploit in the future even if they had no immediate need for it.
On sixteenth of January of this year the picket detected incoming kinhalan ships. The human vessels were utilizing maximum emissions control and were likely not initially detected, however the enemy craft was equipped with stealth engines and was detected at a range so short it was certain the Brazilian exploration ships were detected as they begun to withdraw.
The danger is not immediate. There are eight jumps between the site of the encounter and the Wrota system and it will take time for kinhalans to survey them. Unfortunately the Federation is boxed in by the Guardians which means the route is more or less a straight line with few outcroppings that could waste Unity’s time.
For now Brazil intends to establish an actual military picket three jumps from the contact system. If the alien survey ships are blown upon entry, they won’t be able to do any survey.
After the previous invasion the Joint Tactical Institute for Military Research (JTIMR) was established for nations to coordinate information exchange and military tactics between the three human powers, but it was mostly a powerless organization with low ranking officers assigned to it. Nonetheless they were invited to the meeting and while seen as a PR stunt, the officers there took their job seriously and were considering all possible scenarios.
As they pointed out only one exploration ship will be stopped this way. After that battlecruiser groups will be arriving as the enemy had four known jump ships of that size and they had time to rebuild their fleet, not to mention at least four capital ships managed to escape. Forward defense won’t be possible and as such humanity must try and fight delaying action within Brazilian space while preparing an actual fortified position further dawn the chain, one that will include the type of bases, both ground and orbital, as the Parana system has.
They also point out there is still time, more than there appears. It is known the aliens sacrifice speed for fuel efficiency and their home planet is within round trip for their ships. However unless the enemy has jump capable tankers, their warships should not have the range to attack the system Brazil intends to picket and then go back. As such it is very likely the enemy will have to either stabilize a lot of jump points or build a new vessel before the battlecruisers will start arriving.
Nonetheless the picket force must be strong, which means Poland and Korea will likely have to contribute.

The situation was serious enough that, for the second time in history, the heads of the three states met face to face. Everyone tried to find excuses but media still managed to pick up that something extremely dangerous was happening.
If the aliens were to advance through Brazilian space, Poland would be in the most desperate position. For all instances and purposes their mineral resources in the Parana system have been exhausted. If the Wrota system is lost, the Republic will have to surrender.
Korea is in a better situation, but not much. They could keep going for a century, at most, and while it sounds impressive, the war is now ninety years old. It would be a loss for them as well. Only Brazil could resist for a significant amount of time, but their resources are also finite and would likely last only two, maybe three centuries although if they were to carry the entire human war effort, it is very likely they could run out within a century as well. Wrota had to hold, at the very least.
In desperation, Poland decided to take a chance and propose actual strategic cooperation. They have offered to stand shoulder to shoulder with Brazil, offering their entire fleet for the picket duty, although the ships would have to rotate which means only half would be at the spot at any given time. They also revealed the existence of Osa D, which will be able to hit the invaders before they could reach any target. They’ve also given the other two nations firm numbers of what they have – two thousand and twenty missiles ready to launch in a single salvo, but no reloads. They’ve also begun pushing Korea for developing something similar.
The Republic have long suspected DPRK have already thought of something similar but they never developed such a munition because they actually wanted their competitors to be weakened, especially after the hammering they have themselves taken. Many agreed this was very stupid, as it was better to have the capability and pretend not to have it, rather than simply discard it, but everyone understood that this kind of idiocy is normal in dictatorships. Nonetheless when put in the spot and confronted with the fact another nation had something like that, the Korean leader begun wavering and eventually agreed to develop similar capability.
After that Poland tried to pressure Brazil to establish a missile base in the inner system so that all three powers could drawn the aliens in missiles as soon as they enter the system, but the Federation had other ideas. They have taken the criticism of the two powers to heart and they’ve been using their industry to produce ship components to speed up production. Recently they have laid dawn three new destroyers and managed to cut their construction time by about half, equating to three years. They’ve also pointed out that while fortifications are indeed powerful and necessary, in the end it was always the fleet that dealt the finishing blow and this probably isn’t the last time a new front have been opened, something only a mobile force can respond to. As such they intended to focus on warships, leaving static defenses to the other two nations.
Meanwhile the JTIMR proposed a very interesting idea to make the blockade much more powerful – development of anti-missile sized shipkillers. As they point out Brazil has six destroyers, three of which completed refits and more are being laid dawn. Those house their interceptors in single shot box launchers and each has two hundred and forty of them. In the confines of a jump point battle, this could easily become a dead cruiser. For that matter Poland with their repeatable, fast firing launchers could also do a lot of damage if they had something like that. The Federation agreed immediately, but the Republic was more reserved.

While seven light cruisers begun moving towards KRC 61090 where the defensive line is being established, Poland have been trying to figure out whether or not they can afford to start building new type of offensive missile and the answer is no, but yes.
Right now Baszta can fire a single salvo of ten thousand submunitions and while that sounds impressive, it wouldn’t be enough. In theory a salvo forty percent as strong managed to destroy six battlecruisers (formerly classified as battleships), but those were damaged and the fleet had degraded point defense due to loses. If the aliens arrived at the same strength they did previously, this would be enough to destroy, at best, a third of their fleet.
In addition the Republic has over forty thousand newest generation Iglas, but that is also a rather low amount, considering the existing fleet requires eight thousand and each of the new, large bases on Baszta requires over six thousand. More munitions are needed. However there may be a way to get them without reducing current production.
Marzanna for all instances and purposes is no longer building any installations for itself, not counting new research facilities which are being constructed every fourteen months or so. Moreover Poland has the largest commercial shipbuilding complex in the system. They have a total of thirteen yards and can work on over two million and three hundred thousand tonnes of shipping at any given time. Even before the latest attack that was more than the other two powers combined. And while ships could always be produced faster, they have what they need for a stead and reasonably fast growth. In short the shipbuilding sector no longer has to expand quite as rapidly as it once did and the capital now has twenty million surplus workers, enough for four hundred ordnance factories – fifty more than what Baszta has.
Resources may turn out to be a problem, but as soon as current project of automated mines is completed, Marzannas ammunition production facilities will be expanded and a new missile will be designed.

The three nations have been arguing about where to establish a second defensive line, without success so far. Brazil wants to establish it as far away as possible, preferably in KRC 61090 where the fleets are gathering as this would leave them with some worlds to exploit for resources and give strategic depth so another defensive line could be established if this one collapses. Korea however is not convinced. As they point out building ships, or fortifications, takes a really long time so strategic depth is irrelevant. They are also unwilling to die for Federal interests. For them the line should be in the Wrota system.
The issue is that all four jump points in Wrota are over two billion kilometers away from the star, too far away even for Osa D to reach. The alien entry point in the KRC 61090 however is three hundred million kilometers away from the star and there are several bodies where missile bases could be established.
In the end no compromise is reached. It is obvious that Korea is doing what Brazil was trying to do – stick the other two nations with the cost of the war, while hiding behind them. Only while the Federation ultimately failed at that, DPRK may get away with it.
In the end Poland and Brazil will try to develop that system into another fortress, however that won’t be easy for the Republic doesn’t have the spare industrial capacity for this. Marzanna has the largest industry but it is supporting other colonies and has to build up its own ordnance manufacturing. Baszta has only seventy percent as much production capacity and is focused entirely on self-expansion due to being responsible for defending the nation in the Parana system. Kleczanow, which is now fully habitable, has only thirty percent as much capacity as the capital and is consumed entirely with enlargement. It will be years before the process can actually begin.

Marzanna have completed expanding its ordnance production sector, allowing it to manufacture nearly three thousand anti-missile sized munitions per year, currently divided equally between interceptors and new, small, shipkillers named Wlocznia. There is still manpower available so the expansion could continue, but the government knows they need to focus on other tasks.
In theory Poland should be building missile bases in the Brazilian space to halt the advance of kinhalans, but it is unlikely any such base will make a difference in the short term and the government is worried about exposing its civilians to alien occupation, even if Federation have already established a colony of twenty two million in the system, which they renamed Escudo. Of course the other nation doesn’t have to worry about orbital habitats and has the largest civilian fleet in existence, so it is easier for them.
Poland however has its own problems. While mineral situation have largely stabilized, they are lacking boronide, one of the two minerals needed to build orbital habitats. They have enough of it remaining to build enough habitats for over ten million people but they are mining only very limited amounts of that particular resource.
It should also be noted that establishing a completely self-sufficient colony, one that will be producing its own ammunition and missile bases would require far too many habitats which means that the proposed colony in Escudo will likely be small and focused on assembling and managing bases and missiles delivered from other planets and Kleczanow is still in the middle of expansion while Marzanna and Baszta are needed for other tasks. In short the Republic cannot really afford the project right now, but they can solve their boronide issue.
Nonetheless Poland intends to honor its commitment to the common defense with ships. New cruisers have been launched recently and they are all partaking in the picket rotation.
As for boronide mining, there are no amazing sites to get that particular mineral. The best one is a dwarf planet at the edge of known space and within two jumps of three different Guardian task forces, but nothing can be done about it. The system, formerly known as KCK 1032 is renamed Rubin and the dwarf planet is named Bogdanka.

Brazil have launched their last destroyer. They were left with six after the last invasion and now they have twenty one but they won’t be building any more as the shipyards are retooling to build cruisers. All of those warships are on rotation to and from Escudo.
New Cold War / Cold War: Month 212, Lothar Attacks

Month 212, Day 3, Dether system
The Alliance 3rd Fleet, dispatched from the core sector, arrives over Dether Prime on this date.  After a short consultation with Tai-sa G’Tak, the fleet moves towards Stahat, where it will proceed deeper into the Far Frontier sector to show the flag and attempt to persuade reluctant D’Bringi colonies to end their passive resistance.

Month 212, Day 8, Alliance Nagasaki System
The Nagasaki system contained two type ST planets and one type T planet, and was home to just over ninety-four million D’Bringi and Rehorish citizens.  At 0830 hours the battle squadron under the command of F’Nor, Skull-Splitter’s son, settled into orbit over the second planet, which was the location of the largest population of the system.  Sho-sa F’Nor had been in contact with the colony leaders since entering the system, and they were delighted at his presence.  They had fought off an attempted coup by pro-Imperial groups early on in the current difficulties, and since then had been trying to put together an alliance of D’Bringi colonies in opposition to the Imperialists.  In this they had largely been thwarted, as all communications had effectively been cut off by the corruption of the ICN, and all of the emissaries they had sent on the freighters that had called upon their planets had been seized by the pro-Imperial government in Jerothal, which stood between them and the rest of the Alliance.  Their only success was with the colony in the Olwa system, which was positioned beyond the Nagasaki system, towards the frontier.  The government on Nagasaki Prime had had to live with constant threats from the Jerothal system, and constant attempts to sneak agitators and moles into their population on nearly every freighter that called upon their colony.  With no way to defend themselves aside from a small but growing militia, they had only been saved by the fact that the pro-Imperialists in Jerothal hadn’t had any warships or troops to send towards them either.  Now, though, with F’Nor’s squadron in-system and the ICN re-established, things had changed rather drastically in favor of the loyalists in Nagasaki.  After a short period conferring with the colony’s leaders, F’Nor chartered the Alliance cargo and transport vessels in-system to transport a large portion of the loyalist militia to the Jerothal system.  Once the troops were embarked, he left three cruiser-carriers over Nagasaki Prime and set out for Jerothal with the rest of his force.

Month 212, Day 10, Lothari Kingdom
The assault force, chosen by High Swordsman Wagner and commanded by his picked officer, Swordsman of Stars Hartmann, left orbit.  It consisted of six battlecruisers, three light carriers and three escort carriers.  This was approximately two thirds of the active Lothari fleet, although the Supreme Leader had ordered the reactivation of the reserves, meaning the yards were busily reactivating over twenty ships of all sizes.

The assault force’s destination was the Alliance frontier colony system of Liawak, and they would arrive at the warp point to the system on the 25th.

Month 212, Day 15, Colonial Union Capital, New Plymouth
In spite of fear of violence from fanatical New Dawn supporters, the elections run relatively smoothly.  By the end of the day, it is clear that the New Dawn Party has been devastated.  It has gone from having a small majority, to being one of the smallest parties in the Senate.  Senator Semenov’s Independence Party picked up the most seats, and while not a majority, it is in a position to form a new government in alliance with one or more other parties.  This development didn’t surprise anyone, given the fact that the sitting Prime Minister from that party had been removed under suspicion of high treason and corruption, along with several ambassadors and the Foreign Minister.  The ongoing investigation was certain to spread throughout the government, and would certainly sweep up many more in the coming months.

Month 212, Day 18, Alliance Jerothal System
Sho-sa F’Nor’s squadron entered orbit over planet wracked by civil war.   It seemed that sometime in the last five days dissidents, fueled by unfiltered news arriving via the re-established ICN, rose up against the Imperialist government.  After a short period of observation F’Nor was able to determine that the Imperialists had lost control of the countryside and had retreated to strongholds in the largest cities, which the loyalist forces were now converging on.

Over the next two days, F’Nor established communications with the leaders of the rebellion and began shuttling down his troops and the weapons he had managed to acquire before departing the T’Pau home system.  While his limited number of militia troops couldn’t turn the tide alone, F’Nor felt that if they acted as a strike force within the rebel organization, they could tip the tide to the rebels.

Month 212, Day 25, Zir Villiers system
Ships extending the new Alliance ICN reach the Villiers system on this date, finally putting the 6th Fleet back in touch with the core worlds.  This is a relief for both the 6th Fleet command team and the T’Pau and Rehorish leadership.  For now, the 6th Fleet is ordered to continue its mission of guarding the system while maintaining readiness to act if the ceasefire with the Colonial Union breaks down.

Month 212, Day 25, Alliance Liawak system
The warp point to Lothari space was guarded by three Rehorish destroyers and a D’Bringi escort carrier which had remained loyal to the Alliance.  The guard force had been assigned here after the Lothari seized the Herzberg system, which was adjacent to their home system, in what the Lothari had called a ‘mistake’.  By the time the Alliance challenged them over their seizure of the system, the Lothari had already placed a colony on the system’s lone type T planet.  As the system was distant from the Alliance’s major systems, and the planet itself was rated as poor, the Alliance decided to let the Lothari have the planet, but gave them a stern warning against intruding into Alliance space without permission again.  Since then, the Lothari had been quiet, reliable trading partners, and the patrol group had been considered a backwater, far from anywhere interesting.  That changed at 0200 hours when Lothari ships began transiting into the system.  The first ships through were a trio of battlecruisers, followed by three light carriers.  After recovering from transit effects, the carriers began launching fighters as ships continued to enter the system.

The Alliance force was stationed one light minute from the warp point, well out of range, relying on the sensor buoy placed close to the warp point for detection and scanning duties.   Upon detecting the unscheduled transit, and receiving the scanner information from the buoy, the patrol group’s commander brought her ships to alert status and sent a challenge to the Lothari ships.  There was no response from the Lothari force, but their fighter force, seventy-two fighters strong, set out for the Alliance group at full speed.  The Alliance force turned away from the oncoming fighters and moved away.  Warnings were dispatched up the chain via the ICN, and were transmitted to the invaders.

It soon became clear to the Alliance patrol group’s CO that the Lothari fighters, which were faster than any known fighter, were more than fast enough to run down her force before they ran out of endurance.  The Alliance Patrol Group boasted a grand total of twelve fighters, and the Rehorish destroyers were outdated and had been scheduled to be refitted before the Alliance fell into its current difficulties.  After discussing the situation with her ship commanders, the patrol group commander sent a message to the Lothari asking their intentions.

Swordsman of Stars Hartmann responded to the Alliance commander, stating that the Kingdom of Lothar claimed this system, and all within it, and demanding that the Alliance force surrender immediately or be destroyed.  This began a terse exchange of messages, with the Alliance commander trying to find a way out for her patrol group, while Swordsman Hartmann remained unyielding, offering only surrender or destruction.  Finally, with the Lothari fighters closing in on her force, the Alliance commander ordered her ships to drop their drive fields.  Almost immediately life pods began spilling from the ships, and then, one by one, the four Alliance ships exploded, depriving the enemy of their prize.

The Lothari fighters hovered around the life pods, and the main force arrived thirty minutes later, at which time they picked up all of the life pods, rescuing the Alliance crews.  Sho-I Watanabe, former commander of the patrol group, was ushered into Swordsman Hartmann’s office.  Expecting horrors, Watanabe was surprised to find out that the Swordsman was an urbane and civilized person, and appreciative of the intelligence and honor that she had shown in surrendering her force rather than forcing a needless and completely one-sided bloodbath.  The Swordsman promised to treat the prisoners well, and kept his promise.  Over the next several weeks the Alliance crewers were fed well and treated with respect, and Sho-I Watanabe spent much time with Swordsman Hartmann, discussing various issues not relating to the state of war that currently existed between the to nations.

Month 212, Day 26, Alliance capital at Rehorish Prime
Word arrived via the ICN about the Lothari invasion.  This is a critical time for the Alliance; however, things were much improved over the last month to six weeks.  Communication was restored throughout much of the Alliance, the Stahat system was under firm Alliance control, the D’Bringi Empire was apparently bottled up in the D’Bringi home system, and negotiations moving forward with the Colonial Union.  Because of this, the Alliance Council felt secure enough to begin diverting significant naval forces to that area.

The layout of the warp lines heading back inwards towards the Alliance from the Liawak system are fortuitous for the Alliance.  The warp line that connected the Lothari occupied Liawak system with the next system inwards terminated in a closed and undetectable warp point in the Liawak system, which meant that the Lothari would not be able to detect it with their survey instruments.  They could still discover it through the examination of captured ships, or assets on the colony that they had captured, but if those efforts failed their attempt to penetrate into Alliance space would come to an abrupt end.  All of that meant that while the Alliance naval forces in the area would have to guard against the possibility of the Lothari actually finding the warp point, they would hopefully have the time they needed to assemble a powerful force to relieve the Liawak system and take the war to the Lothari.

Currently, the closest naval forces to the Liawak system and the Lothari incursion are the D’Bringi loyalist units under Skull-Splitter’s son in the Nagasaki and Jerothal systems.  This consisted of three battlecruisers, five heavy cruisers, and a strike carrier.  Not enough to engage the Lothari, but at least they had something close by.  The Chruqua Nexus was adjacent to the Jerothal system, and the Alliance 4th Fleet had been dispatched there as a reaction force during the recent difficulties.  Now, the 4th Fleet was given orders to move out to the Nagasaki system, to act as a defensive force.  Unfortunately, the 4th Fleet had largely been stripped of carriers to provide reaction groups for the various hot spots that had popped up over the last year, so they would remain on the defensive until reinforcements arrived.

Fearing that the 4th Fleet would not be enough to stop the Lothari, particularly given its light carrier complement, the Alliance Council ordered the 1st Fleet at Rehorish Prime to dispatch heavy reinforcements as soon as possible.   One day later a force of forty-two warships left Rehorish Prime, including almost all of the 1st Fleet’s carriers.

In addition, the forward fleet base at Kumamoto, just three jumps from Nagasaki, is ordered to dispatch reinforcements as well.  Hours later, three carriers, two escort destroyers, three escort carriers, and three corvette-carriers leave the base at Kumamoto for Nagasaki.

Finally, the Doraz and the Torqual were sent a war warning, and the Alliance Council invoked the mutual defense clause of their treaties of alliance.  For now, the Council requested that the two member races send a portion of their fleet to the Chruqua Nexus, where they would act either as reinforcements, or, if necessary, a blocking force should the Lothari advance in that direction.

Month 212, Day 30, Alliance capital at Rehorish Prime
The empty carriers dispatched back to the Alliance core systems from Dether arrive over Rehorish Prime on this date.  Yard capacity will be diverted next month to begin replenishing their fighters so that they can be redeployed as quickly as possible.

Also on this day, the pro-Imperial government on Jerothal falls to loyalist forces, causing the collapse of pro-Imperial resistance across the planet.  Sho-sa F’Nor immediately orders his ships to return to Nagasaki, to reinforce the ships he left there, in case the Lothari advance down the warp chain.

Also on this date, the Lothari assault force arrives over Liawak Prime.  Swordsman Hartmann orders the colony to surrender.  After some negotiating, the colonial leaders agree.  Lothari ground forces will arrive early next month.

What a riveting story! It's also nice to see focus on different nations instead of the usual big players. Never expected to see Poland-Brazil-North Korea sharing a system like this!

A massive kinhalan fleet arrived in the Parana system. The jump point was under active observation by one of the Polish scout ships and the transit took several minutes as four vessels had to perform multiple jumps in order for the whole enemy force to enter.
At the heart of the alien fleet were twenty one battleships, each massing eighty two thousand and eight hundred tonnes. Four of those were jump vessels, but that still left seventeen actual warships, larger than anything built by humans so far. Those were supported by four battlecruisers, similar to the ones that attacked seventy eight years prior, massing fifty nine thousand and eight hundred tonnes. Their limited number indicates the aliens have likely abandoned the class in favor of battleships.
The fleet also comprised nine cruisers and fourteen destroyers. The former were thirty six thousand and eight hundred tonnes and the latter were nine thousand and two hundred tonnes. Overall the enemy have thrown forty eight warships with a combined mass of nearly two and a half million tonnes against the Parana system.
The scout itself was safe, but the long enemy inactivity have made the Polish government complacent and one of the comets was only fifty four million kilometers from the jump point, well within missile range. While the mining ships have proven surprisingly resistant to damage, the government was not willing to experience the Korean War all over again and ordered the crews to abandon the four ships orbiting the comet. Other mining groups and the fuel harvesters were also ordered to scatter, moving towards Bialomost if they were in the inner system, or towards random empty space if they were not. The Republic had to preserve as many of their assets as possible.
The Polish ready fleet comprises fourteen escort cruisers. One additional cruiser, the ORP Kopystrzyn, was undergoing a refit. Some destroyers and frigates were on picket duties or undergoing overhaul and those that weren’t were so small and old they were not considered to be part of the battle fleet.
Korea had ten cruisers and eleven destroyers ready. Brazil had six destroyers and eleven cruisers ready. Taken together the Parana nations had around eight hundred and thirty thousand tonnes of warships, a third of what was coming. Fortunately the Republic and DPRK had a lot of missile bases and Brazil had a shell of twenty two orbital bases the smaller of which were somewhere between a destroyer and an escort cruiser in size and the larger ones were almost as large as regular cruisers.
For two hours the aliens did nothing. The Intelligence speculated they were analyzing all data they could access and since most of the internet wasn’t encrypted, it was a lot. Considering the Unity observed Parana for unknown amount of time before the First Invasion the language would likely not be an issue.
To everyones surprise the enemy set course for the C component. The Intelligence begun speculating that since Brazil had the largest shipbuilding industry they just became the primary target. This will also allow the aliens to strike something important while avoiding the heavy defenses in the inner system.
The Polish and Korean fleet decided to stay put. Everyone remembered the failed Brazilian ambush during the first invasion and the two nations had no intention of repeating it.
There was one piece of data that was interesting. Pretty much every nation in Parana have progressed technologically, seen easiest by the speed of the existing ships but the kinhalan force was still moving at eighteen hundred kilometers per second. However their ships, despite seemingly similar, had different energy signatures. The Intelligence believed that while the aliens may have stagnated technologically, the more likely explanation is that they simply did not upgrade their warships, preferring to build as many of them as possible instead. If true some of those vessels may be decades out of date.

With the aliens halfway to their destination, the Korean fleet broke orbit and headed for the enemy entry point. Turns out that two of their cruisers were jump ships and they intended to take control of the kinhalan entry point. If they could do that and if the combined Parana fleets could set up ambush on the other side it may be possible to devastate the invading fleet as it was retreating.

Eight Korean cruisers and two jump cruisers entered formation and jumped into the enemy system. They were never heard from again. It was obvious the aliens had either a blocking force or fortifications on the other side and while it is possible it has been nearly destroyed by the attack it is also possible it was powerful enough to repel all Parana could throw at it. Besides there were no dedicated assault ships left in the system as Korea was the only one to build them.
The remaining eleven DPRK destroyers waited two hours before heading home.

Several hours previously the alien fleet have used the Lagrange point to jump to the B component. Brazil wasn’t sharing anything with the other powers but suddenly detonations were detected. Considering they were one mega tonne in power those were likely enemy anti-missiles striking incoming ordnance.
Their first volley intercepted three hundred and ninety nine. Over twenty eight hundred defensive detonations were detected before the Federal missile wave reached the fleet. Once that happened one hundred and forty two energy weapon impacts were detected followed by two hundred and twenty three missile detonations. While only a fraction of the Brazilian wave reached their targets, some ships had to be damaged and one destroyer have been killed.
Twelve hours later sixty one nuclear detonations were detected less than four million kilometers from Amazonia. Over the next ninety seconds over fourteen hundred explosions were detected but it wasn’t enough and nearly five hundred broke through, striking she shipyards and destroying half of them.
Half an hour later another series of explosions was detected. Brazilians intercepted over nine hundred missiles but the rest obliterated their remaining shipyards.

Shortly after midnight over a thousand anti-missile explosions are detected on the surface of Chapada, the innermost planet of the B component. It is a venusian world with several orbital habitats and numerous mines providing Amazonia with resources. Brazilian chatter confirms the aliens have just destroyed all the mines, but apparently the habitats remain untouched.
Four and a half hours after the bombardment, the Federal Republic launched a second attack on the invaders. Only forty eight of their missiles reached their targets and there appeared to be no damage.

The kinhalans jumped to the C component six hours ago and set course towards the primary star. After refining their course it turned out they are on their way to Turow. The dwarf planet is home to over twenty eight million people and has six hundred mines, half of them automated. It would take Marzanna over eleven years to replace them. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done as the dwarf planet is outside any static defenses and the Polish fleet is far too small to confront the enemy.

The alien fleet arrived at Turow. As the dwarf planet had no atmosphere, they didn’t have to use their anti-missiles, instead using their laser batteries. Within five minutes all mines on the surface were destroyed.
Before the attack Turow produced seven thousand tonnes of duranium and neutronium. The latter is plentiful, but there is only twenty thousand tonnes of the former in storage. This will have significant repercussions for the Republic.
The alien fleet begun moving shortly after the attack, ignoring the habitats. Their course seemed to point towards nowhere, but the Intelligence believed the enemy was moving towards Pyongyang on an oblique course. Their presumed target was a gas giant orbited by three Korean mining colonies. All three are housed in orbital habitats which means the ground installations will be bombarded.
The enemy seems to be avoiding causing collateral civilian casualties. There were two more Brazilian mining colonies around Parana B, but those were left alone as the population was housed in ground infrastructure and any attempt to destroy the mines would have likely resulted in significant casualties. Any orbital colony seems to be a fair game however.

The invading fleet have steadied on their course several hours ago and now they’ve come under attack from Koreans. Judging by the numbers of detonation Brazil was launching between three thousand and thirty five hundred missiles, but Korea could fire six thousand although whether or not they had ammunition for that was unknown.
Unfortunately right now Kim Jong and Marzanna were on opposite sides of the star which meant it will be impossible for the Republic to assist.
Nearly two thousand missiles broke through, killing one battleship and one destroyer while leaving another battleship dead in space. Several minutes later it was abandoned.
The enemy fleet split in two groups. One was moving towards Pyongyang. Another one was moving back towards the jump point, but they were slowed. Detailed analysis shows one vessel was likely heavily damaged and was escorted by a jump ship and a cruiser. The force was unlikely to escape but the enemy likely decided keeping a heavily damaged ship in formation will just result in her destruction and with defenders being glued to their planets no one should be able to intercept anyway, as they were moving directly away and had significant head start. There weren’t even any Lagrange points that could be used so it probably seemed like a justifiable risk for the aliens.
Nearly four hours later, near midnight, the Polish fleet broke orbit and headed towards the jump point, although on an oblique course. The escort cruisers had speed of four thousand and four hundred kilometers per second and should arrive before the enemy. They disengaged their active sensors but it was unknown whether or not the invaders will see them on thermal sensors.
It was still a risk however. Those fourteen cruisers carried over seven thousand anti-missiles which may be sorely needed for defense. However the enemy was so powerful that an opportunity to defeat a small task force in detail couldn’t be ignored.

The alien fleet arrived near Pyongyang and over a period of an hour destroyed all mines on Daebong, Komdok and Sangnog. After that they moved to a point eighty million kilometers from Kim Jong and launched a missile attack.
The Korean defenses have done well, shooting dawn most of the missiles, but enough of them broke through to destroy four of their yards. Nearly an hour later another attack was launched, but this time only one yard was destroyed.
The Intelligence was fairly sure the aliens could fire at least one more volley but they apparently decided to keep it in reserve against human warships as they begun retreating. The smaller group with the damaged battleship have increased their speed slightly forcing the Polish escort cruisers to change course directly for the jump point in order to intercept them.
An hour later the retreating group increased their speed yet again, now moving at nearly two thousand kilometers per second, confirming the enemy has improved their engines. Considering there has been eighty years between invasions their warships have likely very different capabilities at this point.
While the aliens were retreating Korea launched a second attack. However they didn’t have enough ammunition for a full strike and launched only three and a half thousand missiles or so, judging by the numbers of detonations. They also apparently didn’t expect it to do much and focused all their fire on one of the battleships. However kinhalans must have been low on ammunition and the target must have been damaged quite heavily in the first strike because not only have it been completely destroyed, but the remaining missiles managed to retarget and kill three of the destroyers.
Before midnight the small retreating group increased their speed to two thousand and four hundred kilometers per second which meant the Polish warships had no hope of catching them so they begun heading home.

The alien fleet arrived at the jump point into their space and within minutes two more battleships have entered the system. The enemy have stayed put however.

The two recently arrived battleships have jumped away. They seem to be some kind of support vessel, probably a collier which means the aliens are planning more attacks.

The presumed colliers have arrived a day ago and now left again.

The colliers delivered another load of munitions and retreated. This time however the bulk of the alien fleet begun moving on an oblique course towards Marzanna. The battleship that was escorted out has not returned and have probably been sent for repairs but all enemy jump ships have also stayed on the jump point. Either the enemy considers Poland to be much more dangerous opponent, or the loses they suffered from Koreans have made them realize they need to keep those four ships safe to ensure they can retreat and receive supplies.
At any rate the kinhalan fleet still comprises thirteen battleships, four battlecruisers, nine cruisers and nine destroyers.

The enemy fleet steadied their course towards the Polish capital, allowing the missile bases to finally fire.
The Republic didn’t really want missiles, as they were expensive to manufacture but they had to have them against Korea. As a result they invested what they could into their capabilities and, almost by accident, ended up being able to launch the largest salvo of the three powers totaling twelve hundred and twenty Osa Bs for a grand total of sixty one hundred individual sub munitions.
Those weren’t the newest missiles available to Poland but those were the only ones available in large enough numbers for a maximum sized, coordinated strike.
Due to low speed of the main buses the strike needed nearly six hours to reach their targets. Zadlos however were a very different kettle of fish. Judging by the times and distances between first anti-missile explosions and ship strikes the Korean and Brazilian missiles were moving at around thirty thousand kilometers per second. The Republican munitions however were moving at forty eight thousand kilometers per second which should make them far more difficult target.
In the end less than a thousand were stopped by alien interceptors and a hundred or so more by point defenses. Over five thousand slammed into the enemy fleet.
The majority of those missiles were aimed at the battleships and the rest at cruisers. However it seemed Poland have spread their targets too thinly, forgetting that Zadlas had rather light, three mega tonne warheads. Not a single battleship fell out of formation although four cruisers have been destroyed and two more crippled.
The aliens stayed in place for nearly an hour and after that they abandoned the two heavily damaged cruisers. Those were too deep to retreat and likely unable to keep up so this was probably the smartest decision.

Thanks to the enormous range of Osas and the alien course, Poland managed to reload the bases. The enemy was only seven hours away from their estimated firing position, but it didn’t matter.
Two large bases were armed with nearly eight hundred newest generation Osas, submunitions of which had speed of sixty thousand kilometers per second, so most should actually reach their targets. Smaller bases were armed with three hundred and sixty of the first generation munitions. Coordination was essentially impossible and those were much slower, but they should force the aliens to use some of their remaining ammunition.
After this there will be only eighty Osa Bs remaining so third strike will be impossible no matter how much time the Republic will buy.
The larger, more modern strike was aimed at eight battleships, same as previously. While it was potentially spreading the Polish fire too much, some of the targets were already damaged and kinhalans have either withdrawn or abandoned vessels that were damaged too heavily. As such it was considered to be a reasonable division of fire.
The alien defensive fire was borderline ineffective and five of the targets have been annihilated outright while one more was crippled. Within minutes she was abandoned and scuttled as well. The second, smaller missile strike arrived nearly two hours later and to everyone’s surprise scored over two hundred and seventy hits. Unfortunately those missiles had only two mega tonne warheads and the targeted battlecruiser appeared to be unharmed, not counting any armor damage.
The alien fleet have been ravaged but it still comprised seven battleships, four battlecruisers, three cruisers and nine destroyers. The fourteen Polish warships couldn’t meet them in deep space and that of course meant no one else would be willing to help. The Republic will have to take the alien missile attack before any assault on the aliens can be considered.
Hours later the aliens have launched nearly two thousand missiles moving at forty thousand kilometers per second. The escort cruisers with their railguns and gauss cannons were staying in orbit of Marzanna as the naval yards were ultimately more expendable than civilian ones. Poland was using a combination of the second and third generation (newest) Iglas, as they didn’t have enough of the latter to arm all the bases. In the end not one hostile shipkiller managed to get through.
An hour later another salvo arrived, but this time it was only nine hundred and forty missiles. It couldn’t defeat the Polish defenses but it was possible the invaders either launched it before the first one arrived or they were hoping to run the Republic out of ammunition.
Another salvo arrived and suffered similar fate. Shortly after the alien fleet begun withdrawing.
The Intelligence believed that some of the enemy ships are armed with single shot box launchers, hence the difference in size between the first salvo and the follow ups. If so the invaders had only two thousand shipkillers remaining and those would be fired in two waves. If so the Polish fleet could easily withstand it, although there was still some possibility of suffering loses. The issue was what would happen after that. The kinhalan fleet still had over a million tonnes of military shipping, compared to the two hundred and twenty thousand of Polish fleet and while the Republic should have some advantages in short range combat due to not using tonnage for offensive missiles, those were still daunting odds. They needed help.
Korea has been staying put, but Brazil have sent their entire fleet to the jump point. During negotiations about what to do next they admitted their fleet is far weaker than it seemed. First their maximum speed is only two thousand and four hundred kilometers per second. While higher than what the main alien force is capable of, the battleship that was retreating after being damaged by Korea have been moving at two thousand and seven hundred kilometers per second. This means the Federation can never hope to catch the enemy if they split their force and abandon slower vessels.
Second the main reason Brazil lost the yards was an oversight in their construction practices. Their older warships and bases had nearly eight thousand anti-missiles in single shot box launchers, however they never upgraded their fire controls which were designed to deal with much slower munitions. As a result those never fired and that also means that the fleet has very limited anti-missile capabilities as only seven of their newer cruisers can actually engage incoming shipkillers.
Also while not exactly an unanticipated problem, their missiles are constructed for maximum defense penetration and power and as a such can engage from only very low ranges of about thirty million kilometers.
Taking all of that into account Brazil have decided that the best way to utilize their warships is to destroy the jump ships and trap the main fleet in the Parana system or to make those ships run, take over jump point and make the aliens come to them. However the missiles of the main enemy fleet do worry them so they asked Poland to make the first move and to try and run kinhalans out of ammunition.
In the end the Republic agreed. Fortunately their ground bases had so many launchers their ships didn’t have to use theirs and they are equipped with the newest anti-missiles already. As such they were ready to sortie right away.

Seven hours into the chase, the Polish warships were over forty million kilometers away when the expected nine hundred and forty strong missile salvo arrived. What was not expected was their low speed of thirty thousand kilometers per second. It appeared the enemy have run out of modern munitions and was using older ones, which will make the job much easier.
The last missile was stopped four hundred thousand kilometers from the Republican force. They then resumed their chase, closing to four million kilometers and keeping their range steady, but no new missile attacks arrived. Either the aliens were out of ammunition and could launch only four salvos, despite what the Intelligence believed, or they realized long range strikes simply won’t connect and they are holding their last missiles to utilize at ranges so low anti-missiles would become essentially ineffective.
A thousand missiles could do an enormous amount of damage and Poland was not willing to risk it. Brazil and Korea argued that someone has to make the first move, to take the loses in order to properly engage the aliens and since Poland has their yards, it should be them, but for now the Republic decided to simply shadow the invaders.

The four jump battleships suddenly disappeared while at the same time the main alien force abandoned their oblique course and begun moving straight towards the jump point. The Brazilian fleet was one hundred and sixty five million kilometers away and was likely detected.
Hours later, near midnight, the Federal fleet arrived at the jump point. The main invading force was nearly three days away.
During all this Poland and Brazil have been pressuring Korea to send their destroyers. While they are weak, there are eleven of them and they would be better than nothing but DPRK was very resistant due to, according to them, the danger Poland presented. However the other two nations were able to bring enough pressure on them to contribute.
Their ships are capable of three thousand kilometers per second so they should arrive at the jump point before the aliens.

The Polish fleet used their superior speed to outmaneuver the enemy and arrived at the jump point, joining the ships already there. In total humans had forty two warships massing a total of nearly six hundred and eighty thousand tonnes against an alien force of twenty three warships massive over a million tonnes.
The human force refused to fire for now. It was almost certain the enemy had anti-missile left and if they managed to get through the jump point they will be able to re-arm and continue to destroy Paranas infrastructure. This strike had to count so the missiles had to be launched in a situation where the alien point defense would be far less effective.
The invaders apparently thought the same, as they initially held their fire. Once they were less then three million kilometers away they fired everything, both anti-missiles and shipkillers. The strike was somewhat coordinated at launch, but the offensive missiles had different speed and there were two different generations of interceptors involved, so the strike became a stream.
Humans weren’t launching their anti-missiles in defensive mode however, instead doing what the aliens were doing, firing them as a distraction so that their shipkillers could get through. While that was happening Polish crews were trying to manually engage incoming heavy missiles, ignoring the anti-missiles, a near impossible feat considering how quickly the events were progressing.
Paranians launched when the first incoming ordnance was only seven hundred thousand kilometers away. Korea launched three hundred and thirty missiles and eight hundred and eighty anti-missiles. Brazil launched twenty one hundred and twenty missiles and thirty two hundred and fifty anti-missiles.
Poland have stopped a lot of shipkillers, but some got through and ORP Koronowo have been destroyed. The enemy however was doing far worse. Five destroyers, two battlecruisers and three battleships have been annihilated.
The enemy however was still launching anti-missiles and only Polish warships had gauss cannons so a lot of them were getting through. Those were targeted at the smallest ships, namely the Korean destroyers and seven of them were killed.
As the missile storm ended the Polish crews realized there was one more wreck. Apparently the aliens have abandoned and scuttled one of their battleships, leaving only three on the field together with two battlecruisers and supported by three cruisers and four destroyers.
The Polish and Brazilian fleets begun moving to meet the enemy, but Koreans begun to withdraw, pointing out they’ve lost the most of the three powers. There was no argument, as there was no time for it.
The two remaining human nations have agreed to close to two hundred thousand kilometers and then keep firing until one side is finished. They also agreed to start with the smallest ships, to quickly trim dawn the alien numbers.
As the Polish ships were faster, they entered the enemy range first. ORP Malbork was the first alien target. However she had very heavy armor for her size so she continued to stay in formation.
Poland seemed to have better energy weapons than the enemy and they quickly disabled one of the destroyers while ORP Malbork still had the vast majority of her armor. The Republic switched to a second destroyer and killer her quickly. While they begun working on the third one, the damaged cruiser was ordered to withdraw. She had only light internal damage, losing one of her crew quarters and had quite a bit of armor left, but there was no reason to needlessly lose her. She got hammered during the retreat, but she survived.
As the last destroyer have been killed, the Brazilian force finally arrived. They targeted one of the cruisers so Poland decided to target one of the battlecruisers. The aliens have responded by targeting ORP Chojnice. The new targets were far more resilient to damage and she had to withdraw before any aliens were knocked out of formation, with ORP Dabki being the new target.
The battle continued in this form. The aliens seemed to focus on Polish warships and whenever one was too heavily damaged she would withdraw while Poland and Brazil poured their fire into the kinhalan fleet.
The battle was going reasonably well. An alien cruiser was destroyed, followed by a battlecruiser and then Poland had some bad luck. ORP Grotniki was the current target and her armor was barely dented when a shock damaged have caused one of her engines to explode, crippling her. There was no point sacrificing the remaining crew just so she could draw fire for a little longer, so she was ordered abandoned and scuttled.
Another cruiser was destroyed before the aliens arrived at the jump point. The energy duel continued, with everyone wondering what the aliens intended to do as they had no jump ships. Over three minutes after the aliens arrived ORP Wilkomierz have been destroyed by internal explosion triggered by shock damage. By this point all kinhalan cruisers and destroyers were gone and the humans were working on the only remaining battlecruiser. After her there were three battleships waiting to be destroyed. Seconds later four jump battleships have appeared.
Later analysis will conclude that the aliens have begun moving directly towards the jump point specifically to simplify estimation of the arrival time. The fact that the jump battleships arrived within two hundred seconds of the fleet was near miraculous but it also meant the human powers had no time. Orders were given for all ships to close the range to try and kill as many enemies as was possible. They weren’t fast enough. The kinhalan fleet retreated twenty seconds later.
It was unlikely they will return any time soon as their navy has been shattered and their remaining ships couldn’t possibly have enough missiles to get through human point defense. But even so no chances will be taken. The Brazilian fleet suffered no loses so it will head home to re-arm and than will begin picketing the jump point. Most of the Polish fleet was damaged and Korea had almost no warships, so it will be all on the Federation.
The one damaged alien destroyer was abandoned and scuttled.

The Brazilian fleet is back at the jump point. There has been no sign of kinhalans and while the Federal fleet will be able to stay only for a year or so, no one really expects another attack any time soon.
The invasion has been devastating. Brazil has lost all their shipyards and some of their mines. The latter aren’t really that big a deal for them but recreating their shipbuilding capacity will take huge amounts of time.
Korea have lost over a thousand mines, over half of them automated. At their current manufacturing rates it would take them twenty seven years to rebuild it. It is unknown how large stockpiles they have but they apparently intend to expand their industry before building more mines. They are receiving some minerals from their home world, which has deposits of only four of them and their colony of Chogjin in Bialomost but it simply isn’t enough. The situation is so bad they won’t be building any new yards for now as there is simply no point. On the other hand two of theirs have survived, together with three commercial ones so they have shipbuilding capability.
Poland is in a very difficult situation. They were barely mining enough for their needs and even then there were times when they had mercassium shortages. Losing mines in Turow can be a devastating blow for them. For now Marzanna is building three hundred mines, a process that will take three and a half years and will give back the dwarf planet half of their former capability but they do not intend to build any automated mines for Turow. They may build new habitats, but that is also in doubt.
In addition while the fuel harvesters are on their way back to Perun, the cometary mining operations will all be moved outside the system. They simply cannot afford to lose them as their lack of mineral stockpiles means any interruption of fresh deliveries would grind the nation to a halt. Unfortunately the ships will need a lot of time to relocate, sometimes in excess of a year and the resulting logistical networks will need a lot of freighters and fuel.
The one piece of good news is that their shipyards are intact. Warships are being produced and, more importantly, more fuel harvesters, mining vessels, freighters and colony ships are in the pipeline. Those will be invaluable in preparing for the next invasion.
One potential problem on the industrial front are missiles. The Republic focuses on missile defenses not only because of the aliens but also because of Koreans. As a result only a quarter of their manufacturing goes to Osas. That however translates to only seventy missiles – three hundred and fifty submunitions – per year. Unfortunately both Marzanna and Baszta are filled to capacity and cannot enlarge the missile production sector, but that is something that will have to change.
Poland isn’t the only one out of missiles, Korea is in the same situation and Brazil is little better. It is becoming increasingly obvious the aliens have the industrial power to take all Parana nations at once.

So, the Lothari… speedbump or utter roadkill?

Probably speedbump that takes out a couple of patrol squadrons and maybe commits a small bit of genocide in a neighboring system just for fun.

Seems to be one of the things about Starfire AARs, when a generated race is naturally aggressive the mechanics pretty much force them to eventually declare a suicidal war against a major power even if it's not the most rational thing to do - although Kurt always justifies these silly choices well enough in his narratives! Though it does seem like it has been less common in NCW for some reason...

The Lothari are a mighty power in the galaxy!  As all will realize at some point!

The Starfire rules do push NPRs into wars with large races on a regular basis.  In the early game this might be problematic for a player race, but in the mid to later games they are barely speed bumps, even if they do have advanced tech.  In the phoenix campaign I remedied this by allowing the minor races to get together and talk to each other, and plot, under the auspices of the ASR.  This allowed the aggressive NPR's to try to work together against the major races, although in the end it didn't work out well for them.

The Alliance doesn't really work the same way, though.  I have mostly ignored results that require minor races to declare war on major races.  Instead, I either make then irredeemably hostile to further contact, or have them bide their time, waiting for an opportunity.
